(Enemy Mine: another precious the moment when everything changes)
This should be the happiest moment of his life... if what he holds in his hands were his.
But it's not.
And yet his heart is filled with a bunch of mixed feelings: joy, gratitude and fear.
Joy because life has found a way to perpetuate, against all odds. Because he won't be alone in this hell, facing an everlasting solitude, talking to himself like a madman, dying alone on this horrible and merciless piece of rock.
Gratitude for the gift he just received. Gift of the Line. Gift of Life. Gift of trust. He never expected to survive here for long in the first place, and he certainly didn't think he'd miss his friend so much, now that the cold cave walls seemed to close in on him so fast, as the four walls of his coffin. He's grateful for the knowledge he gained on the other. For the humor they taught each other. For the food they shared. For the friendship they built.
However, he's afraid now. Because he has no idea whatsoever about what to do now. How is he supposed to take care of that? It's alive, moving, whining, it's searching for a contact, finds his thumb, grabs it like a buoy.
And the man cries.
Because that little creature has unexpectedly filled his heart and soul with a sense of belonging. He belongs to … Zammis. He will take care of him like he was his own son.
He feels blessed with the greatest gift of all. And he will treasure it, even if he has to sacrifice everything else, even his own life.
He will fulfill his destiny and hold on to his oath.
His life has a purpose again.
