After the battle, people found comfort where they could. For most, that was in each other. And for Ginny Weasley, it was in Luna Lovegood.
They came together in a blur of grief, and loneliness, and need. It was nothing, at first. Two friends, both having lost, both searching for solace from their pain. Two friends with secrets that threatened to consume them the longer they were kept. But, instead of pulling them apart, these secrets drew them together.
It took a while, because Ginny had grown accustomed to hiding her secrets and her pain deep inside of her. Eventually, though, Luna's wisdom and her uniqueness brought her out of the shadows of her own mind. She learned to laugh again, and to trust in a way she hadn't since the moment she had left the Chamber of Secrets. She took comfort in Luna's soft words, and her gentle kisses, and the warmth of her embrace.
They held each other close at night, holding each other together at the seams (holding the secrets inside). They'd talk about their lives before the war, and how different things were now, because it was easier when it was just the two of them, together.
"Tell me a secret," Ginny whispered one night. She couldn't see Luna's face in the darkness, but the silence made her wonder if she had perhaps made a mistake. But she knew Luna well enough to know that often silence just meant that she was deep in thought, trying to find an answer to this new puzzle.
She waited, and, soon enough, Luna replied.
"I think I might have killed someone during the battle," she started, her voice soft and hesitant. "I only meant to stun him, but my spell missed and it exploded some stone next to his head. I ran away before I could be sure, but he looked dead."
A moment of silence passed, broken only by the sound of their breathing. Ginny thought on Luna's confession for a moment, then twisted so that she could see Luna's face.
"When Fred-" A lump formed in her throat, but she forced herself to talk around it. "When he died, it tore me apart. I had nightmares about his death for weeks, but I couldn't tell anyone. I felt so alone. I'm- I'm glad I told you."
Luna hummed and leaned forward to kiss Ginny. "I've never had someone I could talk to before," she said. "I'm glad, too."
It became a tradition for them. Every so often, when they're settling down to sleep, one would ask for a secret. They would share something they had never been able to before, and afterwards, they would sleep that little bit easier, and feel lighter each time.
