Bet
A single word, a single moment; it didn't felt that way to her.
For some time, she'd thought that Zach had been hiding something from her.. she just didn't think it would be THAT!
"Yeah, it was so stupid Laney", Dean said, turning towards her. This felt wrong; everything Dean had said felt wrong, and cold.
Zach's face had frozen when the words left his friend's mouth, and his hands had clenched into fists. Her heart had clinched with them.
"Look, Zach said he could make any girl prom queen and you were the one picked, so he thinks if he takes you to the prom It'll help you win", Dean continued.
Laney watched as Zach's eyes widened and then slid to hers, the movement so quick she could have missed it; but she didn't. That was the important fact here, the important puzzle piece.
Never mind the fact that the rest of the puzzle had fallen out from under her in one quick motion, trailing faithfully behind her... suddenly missing heart.
She almost cried at the realization; When had Zach Siler become her entire world?
Dean sighed and turned back to Zach, shaking his head infinitesimally, "People have feelings man".
With surprising force, the cold Laney had felt just moments prior seared into a pool. Feelings? She felt sick, used... angry. She Loved that bastard, and every moment he had spent with her had been for a BET?!
She twisted her face into as much of a smile as she could manage without breaking like glass, and asked him, "Is that true?".
She sucked in a breath, (it was hard to do at the moment, and she thought she was doing a damn fine job so far), and asked him again.
"Am I a bet?", and she knew her words said one thing while her eyes said another; and God suddenly everything was spinning and "Am I a bet, AM I A FUCKING BET?!" she screamed.
She almost cried, because all at once she wanted nothing more than for him to at least say nothing; to be a coward, and stare at the floor like a misbehaved puppy. He didn't.
Zac sucked in a shaky breath, and replied "Yes". Oh, yes, there was her heart; It took so long to fall that when it dove into her stomach she was truly surprised.
Taylor had sauntered up behind Zach, and set her hands on his shoulders, and she subconsciously knew that the Bitch was saying something; she just didn't know what.
All she knew was that, suddenly, she was hyper aware of everything and everyone around her. Her eyes darted to the right, and Dean was there. Ahead was..
So she turned, slowly; the screaming commands from her brain to 'RUN, RUN, RUN, GO, NOW' taking too long for her liking, and ran. She ran up, and away. From Zach, from the crowd, from her cold heart still lying on the steps she'd just ascended.
She cried.
