THE LAST SUPPER

Cesare returns to Rome and is shocked to learn of Lucrezia's pregnancy. With one child already illegitimate, she asks that Cesare have a papal bull declare Giovanni as his son, to improve the chances of her union with Alfonso D'Este. Word returns of Rufio's death and the execution of the condottieri, and Cesare informs Alexander that the conspirators were working with Della Rovere. Exonerated from accusation, Cardinal Adriano is released and Alexander suggests a feast to celebrate his return and also welcome their cousin Pedro-Luis Borgia as Cardinal. Although his loyalty is in question, Alexander invites Cardinal Sforza but beforehand he inquires of his knowledge of the conspiracy. Ascanio has a chance to divulge the truth, but instead requests to be dismissed as Vice Chancellor. Infuriated, Alexander delays his decision until after the Cardinal's dinner. Cesare convinces Alexander to draw up the papal bull for Giovanni, and Alfonso D'Este proposes marriage to Lucrezia. She accepts, clearly seeing that his obsession is with Leonardo Da Vinci. Cesare comforts Lucrezia with the news of her suitor's nature and spends the night with her before he and Micheletto leave to find Della Rovere. The next morning Vanozza confronts Lucrezia about her relationship with Cesare, but instead of denying it, Lucrezia defiantly admits to it, citing her family's ambition as the reason they have only been drawn to each other. Vanozza strikes her and demands that she put an end to it. Meanwhile, Micheletto suggests Della Rovere may have been in cahoots with Caterina Sforza and Cesare pays her a brisk visit. Caterina unknowingly further implies Cardinal Sforza in the conspiracy. At the Vatican, Todeschini takes charge of the Cardinal's dinner. With his suspicion of Ascanio confirmed, Cesare sends Micheletto to poison both Cardinal Adriano and Cardinal Sforza at the papal dinner, but Della Rovere captures him, wounding his arm. At dinner, Todeschini has the dishes switched, and Cesare and Alexander are poisoned instead.
