Replace
He had been told countless times by countless people, in the politest way they could manage (somehow, it was never polite), that he would look a lot nicer with a replacement covering up the ugly hole. They recommended expert healers, and apothecaries that tended to magical replacements for things like that.
Every time they said this, he would inadvertently raise a hand to the hole, his fingers grazing the rough, unnerving skin on the side of his head. And then his fingers would move to his chest, just over his heart, as if feeling for another long-ago wound.
Angelina said this because he associated his own personal wounds with the loss of his emotional attachment; she always said they may as well have been joined at the hip. He, however, always considered they were joined at heart. This was, he reasoned rather shamefully, why he would always touch his chest in search of something that was no longer there. He sometimes had to do this to remember it was gone.
Angelina seemed to get this; get that he left the gaping hole in his head to remind himself. But still, when he would lie in bed with Angelina snuggled against him, her own fingers tentatively touching the old flesh, she would ask him to cover it over. He would tell her simply no, and she would accept that without another word. At least until the next night.
And it wasn't even just a reminder. It was a tribute, a sign of remorse. The other half of his heart had lost his life; and he had got a hole in his head. It wasn't fair. It was his way of saying sorry.
It was almost as if he was bearing a badge; a symbol, displaying the deep loss that has wracked him for so long. Yes; this is me. I have lost. And I'm never replacing.
Very short. Not very good. Sorry.
I've been a bit discouraged. I recently posted something I must admit I am proud of; He Liked Her. No reviews? Please guys, I'd love you, and you may get a review in return.
Please review this. Thank you so much for reading.x
