She tried. Oh, god, did she try. But how could one just forget about something as big as that? She had known the man for nearly seven years, and it never once occurred to her that shy, handsome Niles Crane could ever be in love with plain, boring Daphne Moon.
That was what Frasier told her, however. Unless he was so doped up on those pain pills that he was just spewing words. She had wanted that to be the reason, but deep down, Daphne knew that wasn't true. Martin pretty much confirmed it, and she knew he was not doped up on any pills.
She couldn't sleep, her stomach was in knots. It all made sense now. There was a fleeting look of disappointment on his face when she called him a good actor. He was so shy and jumpy when he was trying to ask "Phyllis" on a date. "DaPhyllis," he had said, and now she knew that he was trying to say "Daphne," but lost his nerve. She always praised herself on her psychic abilities and woman's intuition- she even pointed it out to him one day when talking about men and their little crushes- but she never put two and two together. She never thought his fidgeting next to her, and his inability to do something with his hands, meant that he had feelings for her.
Oh, the whole thing was just too confusing. She always thought Niles to be a handsome man, and he would make a great boyfriend for anyone. She never told anyone this, but she did imagine what their relationship would be like if they had gotten together.
Suddenly the radio turned on. She supposed she set the alarm, but she couldn't remember. There was a soft song playing.
Could it be, you and I never imagined?
Could it be suddenly I'm falling for you?
Daphne sat up, her heart pounding.
Could it be you were right here beside me, and I never knew?
Could it be that it's true that it's you?
She stared at the wall, and she tried to process the lyrics. It was as if the radio knew she was struggling with her feelings.
It's kinda funny you were always near.
But who'd ever thought that we would up here?
And every time I've needed you,
You've been there for me through
Now it's clear.
I've been waiting for you.
Daphne closed her eyes, and she was overwhelmed with memories. When Eric broke up with her, Niles comforted her. He made her feel so safe and so loved. Did he have feelings for her even then? The memories faded away, and she was treated to a fantasy: she and Niles were a couple now. Their lips were touching, his arms around her waist, her arms around his neck, and they… they were so much in love.
Could it be, you and I never imagined?
Could it be suddenly I'm falling for you?
Daphne opened her eyes, got out of bed, and shut off the radio. She hated herself for this, but she knew now. It was Niles all along. She had suddenly fallen so hard and so fast, and she knew she was in love with Niles Crane.
