I watched as the clock struck 10 pm. He was supposed to be here at 6.
"Make sure you dress up." he had said over the phone.
"How dressed up do I need to be?" I asked. He paused.
"A prom dress would work." he said and I laughed.
"So a formal gown?"
"Uh, yeah. I'll pick you up at six tonight be ready." I could hear the huge smile he had on his face.
"I will be, see you then." I said.
"Bye, Hope."
It had taken me about three hours to get my hair up and looking nice then I put on the dress. I was ready at ten minutes to six. He didn't show. I had called and his phone was off. I changed out of my dress at 9 and took out my hair. I looked like a mess but I didn't care. My boyfriend of over a year had forgotten about a date he had planned. I was royally pissed. I laid back on the couch, than heard a knock at my apartment door. I got up, turned on the little porch light and looked out the peep hole to see Sam in a suit standing out in the pouring rain. He knocked again, soaked head to toe. I put the chain on the door than opened it.
"No soliciting." I said and shut the door. I leaned on the door as he knocked again.
"Hope, I'm sorry, just let me explain."
"Explain what? You forgot about our date." I shouted.
"I didn't Hope, just let me in, so I can explain." he pleaded.
"No, you either forgot, or ditched me." I shouted as I slid down the door and sat on the floor.
"Hope please." I heard him say, I could tell he was resting his head on the door. He hit it a few more times, I just sat there. I could hear him muttering to himself. I looked at the clock, 10:48 pm. I heard movement on the other side of the door. Then everything was silent but the rain outside my door. I was crushed. Sam must have left.
"I don't mind spending everyday out on your corner in the pouring rain." I heard him sing softly. "Look for the girl with the broken smile ask her if she wants to stay a while. And she will be loved. And she will be loved" I caved and stood up. I took the chain off the door and opened it. I smiled as I saw him leaning on the door frame staring at me as he continued to sing. "Tap on my window knock on my door, I want to make you feel beautiful." He smiled as he stopped singing. "Hope, I'm so sorry. The CEO of Fox came in for the last scene we were shooting and said he wanted to have dinner with all of us. I forgot to turn on my phone, and I couldn't tell him no, I couldn't lose my job." He looked at me his eyes pleading for me to forgive him.
"Come on in Sam I'll get you something to wear." I said as I walked towards my room and I grabbed an oversized hoodie, and a pair of gym shorts, hoping they would fit him. He smiled and thanked me as he went into my bathroom.
"Hope?" I heard him say as he walked out of the bathroom, drying his hair with a towel.
"Yeah."
"I'm sorry."
"It's ok Sam I just don't understand why you had me get all dressed up." I said. He smirked and got down on one knee. My eyes got huge. "Sam, you better not be proposing." I said. He laughed.
"No, I'm not." he said laughing. He then became serious. "Hope, two years ago today we met and I haven't been the same since. You've made me a better person so I got you this." he said holding out his fist. I put my hand under his and he dropped a necklace into my hand then stood up. It had a heart shaped locket and a key on it. The locket was engraved 'Hope, you hold the key to my heart, please don't lose it. Love Sam'
I smiled, and jumped into his arms and he held me tight. I pulled back and kissed him.
