Unfinished Dream
"Morning." Nick said with a smile as he opened his eyes and saw his wife staring at him.
"Morning." She grumbled.
"Didn't sleep well?" Nick asked.
"Yeah I slept ok but I had a dream that really made me mad." She said.
"About what?"
"I dreamed that I had the baby."
"And that made you mad?" Nick asked confused.
"No what made me mad was, in the dream you said "It's a…." and then I woke up and I didn't get to hear the end of the sentence, I didn't get to hear if you said boy or girl."
Nick burst out laughing.
"It's not funny Nicky, not knowing is driving me crazy, I don't know why in God's green earth I let you talk me into not finding out."
"Let me ask you something." Nick said with a smile.
"What?"
"Does it matter to you if it's a boy or girl?"
"Well no of course not, you know that."
"Well then why is it so important to you to find out?"
"Because I like to plan for things, you know I plan everything. Like for example do you remember last weekend when Ashley and I went to the mall?"
"Yeah."
"Well at the mall I found an adorable sailor's outfit for a baby boy and I also saw a precious yellow poke a dot dress for a baby girl and I didn't know which one to buy."
"So you didn't buy either?" Nick asked.
"I bought them both, I figured if I start to put us in major debt by buying two of everything you'd cave and let me find out." She said with a grin.
Nick laughed.
"I'll make you a deal, you can buy whatever you want for a boy and a girl and just keep the receipts and then after you have the baby I will personally take the things we don't need back to the store for you."
Jackie gave him a dirty look and Nick just smiled.
The baby kicked.
"The baby's kicking me and I'd like to kick you for being so darn stubborn." She said.
Nick laughed as he laid his hand on her stomach so he could feel too.
"Oh and that's another reason I want to find out, I hate having to call the baby it or the baby. It makes me feel like a bad mom. I'd like to be able to use a name or at least be able to say he or she."
Nick smiled
"let me assure you, you are not a bad mother."
Jackie rolled her eyes, it was clear Nick was not going to cave, at least not so easily.
Jackie glanced at the alarm clock on her dresser, as of right now the discussion about finding out or not would have to wait because she had to get up or she'd be late for work.
An hour later Jackie was ready to go.
"Bye guys, mommy loves you." Jackie said to her children as she blew them each a kiss, she would have given them a real kiss but she was afraid if she bent over that far she wouldn't have been able to get upright again, and she was already running a little late.
"Bye, have a good day, love you." Nick said, giving her a kiss as Jackie opened the door.
"Bye, thanks, love you too, but I'm still mad at you." She said.
Nick chuckled.
He watched her walk to her van and get in. She waved to him and the kids as she drove down the street. When her van was no longer in sight he shut the door and smiled to himself. He had won the find out vs. not battle at least for now that is.
