Waking up is different this morning
Waking up is different this morning. It's not by the relentless screaming of an alarm clock, or the jumping of a small child on my bed. It's by the sound of Temperance Brennan's small footsteps on my bedroom floor. And for that I couldn't be happier.
I sit up in my bed and watch her make her way to the bathroom, a blanket covering the parts that I long to see for the second time. She stops in front of my mirror and leans into it as if examining a bone. I attempt to quietly move to see the reflection of her face, but stop when her body tenses up.
"My pores are abnormally large which may lead to unsightly acne in the near future."
I stifle a laugh, knowing that one wrong move and Bones could declare everything a mistake and throw me out of her life. Instead I sigh and stride over to where she still stands in front of the mirror. Putting her face in my hands, I assure her.
"Nothing about my Bones is 'unsightly'."
Her face softens for the smallest of moments, her eyes turning to a cool blue and her muscles relaxing. But the next moment, she's removing my hand from her face and looking at me with a glare that could kill kittens.
"You realize that the oil on your hands added to my acne-prone skin will not help the problem at hand? And I am not 'your' Bones, I don't belong to anyone."
She ends with a smug look on her face that I accept as a challenge.
"I can't add to the problem if there is no problem. And I see no problem in your skin."
It's my turn to look smug, but my smile falters when I see a look on her face that only happens when a squint-lecture is about to take place.
"It is proven that males prefer females with less acne or skin problems because it is a sign of health and good genes. So it would be rational to conclude that there IS a problem."
She's sure she has won this one, but I've got something she can't argue with. I grab onto her face again, and momentarily enjoy her look of surprise. I pull our faces together, bringing our eyes level and our mouths closer together.
"I am the ONLY male you need to worry about. And I see no problem."
I notice her look of bewilderment, and briefly worry about if what I said is going too fast for the cautious scientist, but all those thoughts are thrown aside when I find our lips colliding and her tongue poking at my lips asking to deepen the kiss. I oblige, and revel in how perfect her mouth feels against mine. Slowly we pull apart, both feeling the need for air. She smiles and mutters against my mouth,
"I see reason in your logic."
I put my forehead against hers and smile. In her own way, Bones, MY Bones, had just admitted I was the only male she needs. And at that moment, I knew I had it all.
