All She Can ask for.
Harry looked out over the bleak graveyard. His coat barely protecting him from the winter air. He was numb, the cold deadening any feeling that had once been in his hands and feet. He sighed heavily before making his way across to the black marble headstone on the outskirts of the pretty cemetery.
Quietly Harry passed each grave, he didn't need to look to know where the gravestone was. He'd been there a million times, each time felt like the first. Sighing he knelt down to remove the dead flowers that sat in front of the headstone.
"Sorry." He spoke to the headstone. "I meant to come yesterday. You know how it is." He tipped a small bottle of water into the ornamental vase before filling it with daffodils. "I got you done new flowers though. You always did like these. Used to tell me they reminded you of Spring. And Wales." He smiled. He closed his eyes for a moment, feeling every year of his age.
"Catherine is doing well." He smiled slightly. "Still stubborn, bossy and headstrong." Shaking his head he arranged the flowers before taking a cloth and reverently tracing the letters of her name with the material.
"I know, I know she takes after me. Poor girl." He rocked back on his heels. "Graham is clean, has a steady job and a lovely girlfriend. Teresa is good for him. The little ones are good too. Gracie is growing more and more everyday. Nick is doing well at school." He sighed as he closed his eyes.
"You'd be so proud of them." His voice cracked. "Even Lilly and Charlie are amazing. I wasn't one for babies when my older ones were tiny. I missed out on so much. Foolish young man. You put me right on that one." He paused as he felt two warm hands on his shoulders.
"Harry."
"She'd have loved you." He paused. "She never really was keen on Jane."
"Really?" Ruth smiled as she looked at her mother-in-law's headstone. "I think I'd have liked to meet her." Harry stood as Ruth slipped her hand into his before squeezing gently. "Take your time. I'll wait in the car." She dropped his hand as Harry nodded, silently thanking her.
"See, Mum?" Harry suddenly felt fifteen again, as awkward as the teenager he had been when he had started visiting his mum's resting place. "I got lucky. No idea how but I did." He smiled. "Ruth is the best thing to happen to me. She's." He paused. "Everything." He looked back to where Ruth was unlocking the car. "I'll visit soon. Promise." He turned away, heading towards his black 4x4. Neither he nor Ruth saw the woman, almost transparent watching him walk away. Neither did they see her smile as Harry touched Ruth's shoulder before pulling her into his arms. She faded away into the ether knowing that at last she could rest, her child was happy and loved. It was all she could ask for.
