The machine was going to explode.

"The shrapnel," Tessa thought frantically. Her eyes zoom across the room and landed on Will. She ran and flung herself on top of him as the mechanical beast exploded.

BOOM!

She rose in a hazy state.

"Tess," Will said in a mortified tone.

He made to grab her arm but she was already running toward Nate. She gave a horrified shriek as she saw him. She pulled the piece of metal that impaled him out and barley caught him in time.

"Tessie," her brother, yes he was her brother even if not by blood, gurgled blood poring out of his mouth. "I'm sorry. S-s-s-soo sorry Tessie."

Out of the corner of her eyes she could see Henry hovering worriedly over Charlotte, Will helping Jem, but none of it mattered.

"Shhh," she managed over her sobs. "I forgive you. I forgive you. I love you. Don't die, please don't die."

"I'm dying Tessie," he managed gently, more blood coming from his mouth. Her sobs grew.

"No. No, you can't leave me. Please don't leave me!"

"Shhh." He placed his hand limply on her cheek.

"Will you sing to me Tessie? The song aunty sang. Y-you know the one."

"Nate," she sobbed, grief and tear clouded her face.

"Please Tessie."

"Come stop your crying

It will be all right

Just take my hand Hold it tight," she tried to clear her throat of the sobs as she softly sang the song.

"I will protect you

from all around you

I will be here

Don't you cry," She cradled him to her chest.

"For one so small,

you seem so strong

My arms will hold you,

keep you safe and warm

This bond between us

Can't be broken

I will be here

Don't you cry," his eyelids drooped a little and she sang louder.

"'Cause you'll be in my heart

Yes, you'll be in my heart

From this day on

Now and forever more

You'll be in my heart

No matter what they say

You'll be here in my heart, always," she could here Jem and Will calling her name but she ignored them and continued singing.

"Why can't they understand

the way we feel

They just don't trust

what they can't explain

I know we're different but,

deep inside us

We're not that different at all," Nate's hand dropped from her cheek.

"And you'll be in my heart

Yes, you'll be in my heart

From this day on

Now and forever more

Don't listen to them

'Cause what do they know

We need each other,

to have, to hold

They'll see in time

I know

When destiny calls you

You must be strong

I may not be with you

But you've got to hold on

They'll see in time

I know

We'll show them together," he stopped breathing.

"'Cause you'll be in my heart

Yes, you'll be in my heart

From this day on,

Now and forever more

Oh, you'll be in my heart

No matter what they say

You'll be in my heart, always

Always," her sobs had returned full force as she rocked back and forth while cradling Nathaniel Grey's dead body in her arms. Darkness clouded her vision.

Tessa was faintly aware of the wounds on her back being reopened and the metal pieces being pulled out of it. She wasn't aware that she was screaming. She wasn't aware that eventually she had to be held down because she'd been trashing around during the procedure. She was not aware that Will held down one arm and Jem holding down the other.

After, she was faintly aware that Will was holding her hand. She could tell, even through the haze, that he was there all the time. Even when Jem came in he did not leave. She heard Jem whisper in her ear that he loved her and then he begged her to survive. And she would. She would heal, but when she woke up she didn't want to become a zombie, someone in so much pain they couldn't or wouldn't speak a word. So, she would sleep for now. She would sleep till she could do those things with out becoming over come by grief.
