Johanna breathes in, breathes out.
Lets the sound of the ocean waves (in, out, in, out: breathe) wash her nightmares away, like debris.
Beside her, Annie wriggles closer. Her body is warm, comforting; Johanna curls herself around her wife and breathes the smell of her in, the salty stench of the sea, the warm, sweet smell of homemade bread. She has never smelled anything better, more like home.
In her arms, Annie shifts, and burrows further into Johanna's embrace. Johanna's lips pull into a tired smile as she drifts off to sleep. Before she fully slips into sleep, a thought hits her. I've won.
When Annie feels the rumbles of her wife's snores vibrating through her chest she peeks up at her face and nearly giggles. Johanna has a fierce, triumphant expression. It would be a little scary if it wasn't so cute.
