As an X-Man, Kitty Pryde knew well that you never knew what you might run across in dark alleys. An X-Man had to prepared to face anything and any danger, from prejudiced humans to Morlocks to actual, certified super villains. She thought she was prepared for anything when she ducked into an alley, following her cherished Professor. Their team had taken turns following him home ever since one of his students at the human university had attacked him, but Kitty was quite certain Xavier had not taken this particular detour before - not a single time - for surely she would have heard about it. Surely, the whole world would have heard about it!

She gaped and gawked at the scene before her, covering her wide open but shocked soundless mouth with both hands. Then she turned and raced away, phasing into the closest building before she could be spotted by the men she was quickly leaving behind. She rematerialized on the other side of the building and leaned against the concrete wall for strength. Her heart pounded, her palms sweated, and her mind raced.

Her brown eyes darted up and down the street, but no one had seen her. Everything seemed normal. Nobody expected anything, but Kitty knew the truth now. Her world was coming to an end in the alley behind her.

She shook inside and slid slowly down the hard, concrete wall to sit on the sidewalk. Her voice returned to her as she huddled there in the cold. "Ohmygosh! Ohmygolly! Ohgee!" She still couldn't believe what she had seen. She had to tell the other X-Men, but how? Where did she even begin? Charles Xavier, their trusted, beloved Professor over whom they'd all been so worried recently, was screwing Magneto?

She blushed a deep, crimson red as she admitted to herself, Well, they weren't exactly screwing. She wasn't even comfortable thinking such thoughts; yet, there they still were in her mind. She couldn't block out the scene of the two men, the man she trusted more than anybody else except for Wolverine and Lockheed passionately liplocking the X-Men's greatest enemy, or the scene that would surely follow. They might not have been screwing, but they hadn't been too far from it, either.

"Pumpkin?"

"Wolvy!" She jumped to her feet and then looked torn. Part of her wanted to rush into his arms and hide from the ugly thing she'd just seen, but she was no longer a child. "What . . . What are you doing here?"

"I smelled Magneto."

She nodded, gulped, and swallowed hard.

"You look like you've seen a ghost."

"No." She shook her head a little too quickly. "No ghost." How could she tell him?

Logan raised his head and sniffed the chilly air again. Then he grunted, snorted, and looked at her in remorse. "Sorry ya had to see that, pumpkin."

Her mouth fell open again. "You knew?!"

His next words were yet another great life lesson to her. They stayed with her from that day on, changing her mind and her attitude and outlook on life. "Everybody's free to love who they want." He snorted, took a puff on his cigar, and proceeded to make her laugh. "Even if they are flaming nuts."
