Worth The Pain
Prologue
"Bye!" Kagome waved to her friends Kaede, Sango, and Miroku before she left Kaede's hut to go home. Suddenly, she felt a tug on the hem of her skirt. She looked down, seeing a young fox demon with a pout on his cute face. "Don't worry, Shippo, I'll bring you back some candy, I promise." She ruffled the child's hair and walked out the door.
"Inuyasha, I'm going home for a bit." Kagome said brightly as she passed by him on his way back to the hut.
He jumped in front of her, stopping her in her path. "No! You just went back a few days ago, and we have work to do here!"
She gently pushed him aside and kept walking. "I just have some things I have to take care of."
"Big deal!"
"I'm going, Inuyasha!"
"No you aren't, Kagome!" He was in her way again.
She sighed. "Sit, boy."
He slammed face-first into the ground. Kagome stepped over him and continued on her way.
"What the hell! You stupid shard detector!" Inuyasha yelled as the subduing spell wore off.
Kagome gasped and whipped around to face him. "Sit, boy," she said again, but this time her voice had a quiver to it.
When Inuyasha stood up, he noticed that her eyes were oddly bright. "Th...that's all I am to you?" she asked, attempting to keep her voice neutral.
"Yeah," he bellowed, still angry with her. "That's all you are to me!" However, the instant Inuyasha said the words he wished he could have taken them all back.
Kagome stared at the ground. She had started to tremble slightly. "I'm going home," she stated, her voice deadly quiet. "Please don't follow me, Inuyasha." Kagome stood and walked down the path to the well, the portal to her own time, her long black hair bellowing out behind her.
Inuyasha just stood there, his mouth opening and closing, as if he wanted to say something but found it impossible to find the words.
As soon as the scent of her tears reached the half-demon's sensitive nose, he instinctively went after her, but when he reached the well's clearing, she was already gone, five hundred years into the future.
