It hurt.

It hurt so much.

Watching the boy she had fallen in love with take another girl to the prom.

But still she smiled, and told him she was happy for him.

He said his thanks, and asked who she was going with.

She looked down, finding her shoes interesting. "No one." She answered.

I was hoping it would be you. She thought.

"I know many would like to go with you." The boy said.

But I only want to go with you! The girl thought.

"I was hoping to see you there." He told her.

Not enough to ask me to go with you. She wanted to say.

But she kept silent.

The boy looked like he wanted to say something.

But he kept silent aswell.

"Well, have fun at the prom." She said.

"I will!" He grinned, walking away from her.

Oh, how it hurt.

Knowing he was with another girl. Not her.

She knew she was pretty. Many boys had told her so.

But never him.

And it hurt.

She started seeing them in the hallways together.

She wanted to be angry.

They started spending lunchtime together.

She wanted to scream.

They fell in love.

She wanted to cry.

They officialy became a couple.

She wanted to blame him for her misery.

But she could not. Knew she never would.

Because they looked so happy together.

Looked like they belonged with each other.

And despite it all. She was happy for him.

Prom came.

Prom went.

She did not go. Did not want to see them together.

They were crowned King and Queen.

They were the perfect couple.

Oh how it hurt!

The school year ended.

They graduated.

She left the state to go to college. Hoping never to see him again.

Hoping to forget.

But forget she did not.

She finished college with top grades.

She got a decent job.

She married a good man.

But never did she forget.

She and her husband visited her childhood home, many years later.

It was christmas.

She decided to take a walk in the town she once called home.

Secretly hoping she would meet Him.

Everything was covered in white.

The sunset red in the sky.

Just like his hair. So pretty. She thought.

She passed the kindergarden.

She passed the local Hair Salon.

She passed the lake she used to love.

But she stopped by the cemetary.

Inside stood a woman.

The woman that had been crowned Queen at the prom she had not attended.

She opened the gate to the graveyard and walked inside. Untill she was standing behind the woman.

"Kamiya Kaoru?" She asked.

The woman turned around. There were fresh tear stains on her cheeks.

How many times had she cried over the man she could not have?

The man this woman had called her own?

"Yukishiro Tomoe! Am I right?" She asked.

"Yes." Tomoe said. "It is so many years since I last saw you."

Kaoru agreed.

Tomoe asked what she had done the last years.

"I finished college and got a job at the Elementary School. Then me and Kenshin got married. You remember him?"

Did she remember him?

She had never forgotten.

A bitter feeling in her heart. She asked how he was doing.

Fresh tears sprang to the womans eyes.

She turned to the grave they were standing in front of.

It was beautiful and well kept.

Himura Kenshin

( 1974 - 2007 )

Beloved Son, Husband and Father.

"He died in a freak accident two years ago." Kaoru choaked out.

She felt a lump in her throat. It would not go away.

The lump grew. And a familiar preasure formed in her chest.

Tears left cold trails down her face.

She embraced the now sobbing woman.

And together they mourned the man they both had loved.

One morned what she had lost.

The other morned what she never had.

She had promised herself she would never cry over him again.

But this last time, it was okay.
