Fiona stepped into the fireplace. She let the green flames swallow her and transport her to Diagon Alley. She was finally going to Hogwarts! After watching Bridget and Aidan go, the waiting was even worse. She knew she was going to be a Gryffindor, she just knew it.
Everyone else in her family belonged to the house of the Lion. Those types of the things run in the family. So why would she be any different?
As she walked through the crowd she found herself getting distracted. Wondering about how hats were made and how to harvest thestral hair. She forced herself to stay focused and not lose track of her family. She trailed behind her sister, Bridget, until her older sibling grabbed her by the sleeve so she wouldn't wander off into a shop.
The most exciting part of their trip is was going to the pet shop, even more so than having her wand choose her. Fiona walked straight to the cat section. As she walked to the back corner of the store Bridget ran after her, her hair dark hair flowing behind her as she caught up with her sister. Fiona was hit dead on as her sister slammed into her side.
She had be watching a tiny kitten. It was black and had white paws and chest which made it look like it was wearing a tuxedo. It had hairs that were white, contrasting against its pitch black fur, which reminded Fiona of the night sky. Her parents came panting as they reached their youngest daughter. One look at her and they bought the cat instantly.
...
When the family arrived home Fiona headed straight up to her room. She smoothed out her red and gold bedspreads and place her kitten on top. It had a beautiful periwinkle color to match the name she had given her new furry friend. She decided to call her Midnight. After those little white hairs that looked like stars.
Her parents wanted her to choose an owl. A barn owl that shrieked and made Fiona's ears hurt. In the store she had cupped her hands over her ears as her father proudly presented her the finest barn owl in the shop. Her kitten had purred and made the most adorable meowing sounds. She chose Midnight with no regrets.
She didn't need an owl. Aidan already had a noisy screech owl named Birch who made noise every single hour of the day 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Her Midnight was better than that. Sure it was not the best idea to keep a cat and an owl in the same house, but she and Aidan had different rooms anyway.
...
Fiona stepped onto the train and heard the whistle blow as the train chugged out of the station. She watched as, for the first time, Platform Nine and Three Quarters roll away instead of watching the train escape from her view.
Fiona went from compartment from compartment looking for a place to sit. Every one she went by was full. She was beginning to lose hope as she approached the last compartment, she would have to bunk with Bridget and her friends in the third year compartment. They were so cool and big compared to her. Sitting with them would be like being an unexpected mouse in an owl's nest. She opened the last compartment to see just one girl. Only one.
The same year as Fiona, this girl had waist long, dirty blonde hair and very thin eyebrows. With eyes that made her have a permanently surprised look. She was reading a magazine, normal at first glance, but then Fiona noticed that she was reading it upside down! She had a necklace made of butterbeer corks. Fiona was about to ask why it was there.
"It's a charm actually," the girl said her voice dreamy, she leaned forward a bit. "Keeps away the Nargles." Fiona was confused. Nargles were extinct. She sat as far away as possible from this grey eyed, loony, dirty blonde haired girl.
