Joanne always was an early-riser. Since she could remember she would wake before dawn. She would do all the things she needed to get ready for the day ahead then sit in the window to watch the sunrise.

Wrapped in a blanket and holding a cup of warm coffee she would wait to see the rays of the morning sun which reflected colors of yellow and oranges, depending on the day sometimes she saw hints of red. Joanne never missed a sunrise, no matter if she was sick or out of town.

She never understood why she would rise to watch it until one morning Maureen came out of the bedroom and found her looking out the window intently.

"Honey, What are ya looking at?" She asked still sounding sleepy touching her shoulder's lightly. It took Joanne a minute to register that she was being spoken to or touched, she was suprised to see Maureen awake.

"hmm? Oh the sunrise" She said looking at her then returning her gaze back out the window. She took it upon herself and position herself in her girlfriends lap.

"Do you always get up this early to watch the sunrise?" She asked looking at her. Joanne just nodded, she knew Maureen was oblivious to her getting up, she was always quiet and also Maureen wasn't the world's easiest person to wake.

"Why?" She asked wanting to know why she would bother to wake to watch the sunrise, Maureen always slept right through it not paying attention to anything unless she had come in wasted or something, which if she did Joanne knew because she always saw her but never bothered to say anything, she would later but not at sunrise which was her time to remain calm.

"Something I have always done never really understood why but I guess I just find it to be the most calming part of the day, everyone is just waking up and most of the city is still quiet waiting for everyone to come out. There is nothing troubling going on and it's the one time my mind is clear and relaxed not worrying about this and that." She looked at the woman sitting in her embrace "We both know that once I step out that door my mind becomes flustered and full of thoughts." Maureen nodded in agreement as Joanne kissed her lightly then returned her gaze out the window as the sun peaked to wake with the city of New York.
