I don't own Grey's anatomy or any of its amazing characters. Also I'm sorry if this is filled with spelling or grammar mistakes, I'm severely dyslexic. This is a renewed and slightly changed first chapter with the help of my new beta reader Jefferson author- thank you so much
Chapter 1: Mistakes Happen
Ridley Grey Shepard loved her parents, she really did but sometimes she wished she wasn't their daughter. It wasn't because she was rebelling against them or thought they were embarrassing, no not anything like that. Actually she thought they were both amazing and a bit like gods in their own way. It was because of their greatness, that people expected greatness from her. And she feared that she would be a disappointment in comparison. Not that she had told anyone other than her best friend Matt but she knew he would never tell anyone. That was why after hours of smiling and pretending to be the perfect replica of both her parents, which she had to expect to do for her internship orientation party, she needed to relax. This also how she and Matt found themselves in a club called Pandora, although as soon as they got there Matt had left her to hook up with a pretty blonde, leaving Ridley alone.
Despite wearing a red studded shoulder dress that went to just above her knees and hugged her body showing off her figure, the perfect red shoes, and a grey blazer to top it off, she felt out of place. Plus with her dark curly brown hair in loose messy curls, dark smoky eye makeup, red velvet lipstick, and matching jewelry, she still looked like she belonged, yet somehow shined bright.
"Hey, can I get a beer and whatever the pretty lady in the red wants?" A random guy who had just come to the bar said, looking straight at her. Normally she would be repulsed, but he was… alluring in the least.
"Oh are you talking about me?" She said giving the man the once over. She noticed that he was actually quite attractive and might even be described as hot, what with his dark hair and eyes.
"Yeah, although to be fair you are the prettiest person in this bar." He said, flashing a brilliant smile. "So what will it be?" He asked, the grin never leaving his face.
"I'm okay on the drink to be honest, I already have one" she said holding up her glass as she went back to her phone, looking at the screen to appear busy and uninterested.
"I'm Mason," He said, pulling her attention again. "Do you come here a lot?" He winced at the line, and so did Ridley. "Wow, I'm sorry, that was such a lame thing to say." He chuckled, getting a small smile. He may be attractive, but she was still suspicious. "I don't do this often." He admitted, giving her that prize winning smile again
"Oh, is that so?" She asked, feigning disbelief.
"Anyways," He said, changing the subject, "What's your story?" Mason sat down on the bar stool next to her, feeling braver than he been before.
"My story?" She said, cocking her eyebrow. "What makes you think I have one?" She moved her body towards him, letting the aura of this strange man lure her in.
"Maybe it's the small scar on your arm," He said, causing her eyes to flicker to the little white line on her interior arm. "Or the sadness in your eyes," He muttered, gazing into them. A chill ran through her, something she prayed he didn't notice. "Anyways, everyone has a story." He said, back to the charming exterior, but she had seen something in his eyes. A pain, a longing. But he smiled despite it, taking a sip from his drink.
"I don't have one, at least not one worth telling." She lied. "What about you?" She asked, wanting desperately for the conversation to stay away from her and her life story.
"Me either, at least not one in Seattle." What? "I just moved here from England." He said, then she finally placed the slight accent she had been hearing the whole time.
"Wow. That's bit of a distance." She muttered. "Why?" She found herself asking, despite the fact it broke every rule in her book.
"I need a change, I guess. Plus I got a job offer here, so I thought 'What the Hell?' then took it." She laughed, amused by his response. He made it seem so normal to just up and move. "What about you, I mean what's your name? Where are you from?" He said taking in everything about her from her perfect dark curly hair to her silky smooth skin.
"Oh!" She exclaimed, realizing she hadn't even introduced herself. "I'm Rid and I'm from here, I moved back a couple of months ago I'm a…" She grasped for anything, anything but the truth. "Singer." She finally said, hoping he wouldn't notice her hesitation and ask more questions.
"A singer! Are you good?" She shrugged, not sure how to answer, or even if she should. "Maybe you could sing for me sometime…?" He said, wanting to know more about the mysterious girl from the bar.
"Yeah maybe, you know I should be going its getting kinda late." She said downing the rest of her drink as she looked at her phone. Noticing that Matt had texted to tell her he had gone to the blonde's place and not to wait up for him, she shouldered her bag and sighed internally.
"Yeah I guess you should." Mason said, taking another sip of his beer. He watched her as she said her goodbyes and walked out of the bar.
The Next Morning:
All of a sudden the small brick apartment was filled with the sound from Ridley's alarm. She quickly hit it, causing it to fall off the bedside table with a bang. Beside her, there was a grunting noise from an unknown source. 'Shit.' She thought as she got up from the bed. She saw that she was not alone in the bed, and then memories from the night before began to flood her head. "Shit." She said aloud, grabbing her housecoat from the chair it was lying on and covered her. As she backed away from the bed, she stepped on a particularly squeaky bit of floorboard, waking the sleeping figure.
"Good morning," An English accent said, slightly horrifying her. "Where are you going?" Mason asked as he moved to looked at her better. She felt her face flush, feeling awkward.
"I'm really sorry, but I kinda need to go. I'm already running late for work so ...you know." She said, still feeling very awkward about the whole thing. She was actually kicking him out.
"Yeah, of course, I'm sorry." He said, standing from the bed. "So this was fun, maybe we should go hang out or something?" He said casually, while quickly getting dressed. At the same time, his eyes never left hers.
"Yeah, or something," She muttered, but doubted it would actually be anything other than a one night stand. "I'm sorry but I really need to get ready so I'm going for a shower and when I get back you shouldn't be here okay?" She said flashing him a cheeky smile, while still trying to be polite.
She quickly showered and got dressed. Once she was ready and about to leave the bedroom, she noticed Mason had actually left, although not before leaving his number on the bedside table. She went into Matt's bedroom and grabbed some clothes for him before grabbing her stuff and heading out of the door. Once she got to the car park, she noticed some people who looked familiar from the orientation party the night before. They were looking around nervously, although to her it was already home. She had no reason for nerves, she always loved this hospital. Although that in itself was a reason to be nervous.
She headed to the intern locker room, where she saw Matt. "Hey." She said, coming up behind him. "Here, I grabbed you some clothes to change into so you don't smell of booze on your first day." She said handing him the clothes she took from his room. He looked up and smiled gratefully.
"Thank you so much." He said. "What would I do without you?" He asked, then quickly input another question, knowing the first would get some sarcastic response. "Anyways- how was your night?" He asked buttoning the shirt he had just put on.
"Well-" She began, about to recount the tale, but she was interrupted by a familiar voice summoning all the interns to follow him to the OR, or Operating Room.
Dr. Owen Hunt, who was the Chief of Surgery and was also married to her mother's best friend Cristina, was someone she had known her whole life as 'Uncle Owen'. He was also the man who would look after her and sneak her into the gallery to see her parents perform the occasional surgical procedure. He was pretty great in terms of uncles.
"Each of you are here today hopeful, wanting in on the game. A month ago, you were in Med School being taught by doctors. Today... you are the doctors. The seven years you spend here as a surgical resident will be the best and worst of your life. You will be pushed to the breaking point." Ridley smiled at the familiar speech. "Look around you." They all did as told. "Say hello to your competition and to your new team. Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty. Five will crack under the pressure. Two of you will be asked to leave." He stopped, letting that sink in as he looked at all of the interns. "This is your starting line. This is your arena. How well you play, that's up to you." He said, pausing again. "So get changed into your scrubs and meet your attending." Owen finished giving the famous Richard Webber intern speech her mother had talked about so many times.
As the interns began to exit the OR and head back towards the intern locker room, Ridley held back so she could talk to Owen. He must have sensed it, because he waited for the room to clear before turning to her with a kind smile.
"What's up Rid?" He inquired with a hint of humour in his voice.
"Listen, I tried really hard to not tell people who I am last night and I'd like it if just for a little while longer no one knows who I am or really knows anything about me." She said, finishing awkwardly. She wasn't sure what she could actually expect Own to do about, but it was worth a shot, right?
"Okay." He agreed. "I'll tell everyone to keep it on the down low." He said, but then turned back. "But you know that they will find out." He reminded her and she nodded. "Hiding who you are is not a long term solution." He said holding the door open for her as they left the OR room.
"I know but as soon as they know, they'll think I'm being treated unfairly or I'm cheating my way into this program or into the medical field in general." She said, feeling a little defeated. It always came down to this.
"But you didn't, your parents would never do that. Have you talked to your mom? I mean from what your Aunt Cristina told me about their intern year, she went through the same thing." He said stopping at the nurse's desk to check on his patient files.
"Yeah that's actually a good idea," She muttered, then remembered that she needed to talk to her anyways. Why not kill two birds with one stone? "I need to tell her something anyway. I'll go and speak to her during my break." She promised, leaving him to re-enter the intern locker room, where she began to get dressed next to Matt.
She knew had to tell Matt about what happened the previous night with that guy from the bar, but she figured it was one night and she'd never see him again so what did matter. Just she was about to say something when a familiar face sauntered through the door. Alex Karev.
"Umm...Peterson, Jones, Adams, Wyatt, oh and Rid you're with me too." He said noticing the glare in her eyes when he said her name, earning her a couple of strange looks from her fellow interns. But no one said anything, and Alex started rounds. "So who wants to present?" Alex said as they entered one of his patient's rooms. When no one answered, he motioned for Ridley to present the patient to the room. She groaned internally and stepped forward. So much for laying low on the first day.
"Okay, Jake age 7 was admittedlast night with severe abdominal pain." She said reading the young boys chart while trying to work out what it could be in her head.
"What would you do now?" Alex asked her. He still thought it was strange that the little girl he had once seen running around the hospital as a child was here now in front of him practicing medicine.
"We need do to a MRI and a CT-" She started, then back peddled. "In that order," She added. "To see more and figure out what the problem is. What that means is, that we need to take a couple of cool pictures of your insides to see what is causing the pain in your tummy." She said, turning to the little boy who relaxed more when she spoke directly to him in terms he could understand. She had been in the pediatric ward with Alex more than enough times to know it made them feel better when they knew what was happening.
"Okay Dr., why don't you order them and then page me along with a general surgeon if need." He said, careful not to use her name this time. "You're the intern on this case." He said, and started towards the door. He stopped and turned back, remembering the one thing she couldn't forget. "Remember the first rule of treating children." He said, without stating the rule. She already knew it, and nodded. "It goes beyond cutting and slicing." He finished as he led the group of interns away to see the next patient.
Ridley began to test the boy's abdomen for tenderness while chatting to him about superheroes and villains to try and distract him from the pain. She found out that his favorite hero was Superman, simply because he could fly. Once she was finished, she went to the nurse's desk to order a MRI and a CT scan. After being told that it was free and she could use it straight away, she went back to Jake's room to take him down to the scanner. What she saw was upsetting.
"Oh that's not good." she muttered to herself as she looked at the scans as they popped up. If she was right, she was seeing what she thought was like liver failure or maybe even liver defect that had gone unnoticed and untreated until now. Either way, she needed to tell her Mom and Alex.
-Grey's Anatomy-
"Hey, Dr. Karev." Ridley called, getting her uncle's attention. "Here is a copy of Jakes scans." She said, pulling the manila envelope from beneath her arm. "I'm just about go and find Dr. Grey to get her opinion on this." She said knowing that if she showed enough independence people might respect her as the individual she was and not just because she had cool parents.
"Yeah that's sounds like a plan. When you're finished there, maybe you can see if you can fit his surgery in with both our timetables- do that and maybe you could even scrub in." He said knowing that that was the one thing she would love more than anything.
"Seriously? Thank you so much, I'll go and do that right now." She said eagerly as she sprinted down the hall to find her mother.
"I think I saw her in the attending staff room!" Alex called after her, heading in the other direction.
As she approached the attending staff room, she felt weird about having to knock on the door rather than just walking right in like she used to. After she knocked, she heard her father's voice telling her that he would be right out.
"Oh! Hi Rid. How's your first day so far?" He asked, slightly overwhelmed at the image of his little girl in her scrubs with her lab coat and soft curls pinned up into a neat ponytail. She smiled and seemed to bounce with energy.
"Great actually! I got to diagnose my first patient and might even get to scrub in on a surgery, which reminds me have you seen mom?" She questioned, knowing she should call them by their professional names but it was out of habit just to call Derek Shepard 'dad' and Meredith Grey 'mom'
"No sweetie, I haven't but I think she might be in a surgery. Did you check the OR board?" He asked his daughter who looked like she had forgotten the most obvious thing in the room.
"No I didn't think of that, thank you!" She said as she began to rush off again. Before she could, her dad gently caught hold of her arm, pulling her back to him.
"Hold on, Rid. I want you to meet someone before you go." He said, letting her into the staff room, only to reveal a room she knew all too well from spending long days in there colouring in colouring books.
"Fine, but if anyone asks me, I'm going to say you were yelling at me because I was in trouble. Because remember Dad- I'm not your daughter. I'm a regular screw up intern." She told him giggling slightly. That stopped when she saw the man her father wanted to meet. It was none other than her One Night Stand Mason. She had some explaining to do, but right now there was no way she was going to let her dad know she had slept with him.
"Like I would say anything." He scoffed, not noticing her suddenly tense frame. "Ridley, this is Dr. Mason Ward. He's the new Orthopedic Surgeon. Mason, this is my brilliant daughter Lexie Ridley Grey Shepard, but she goes by Ridley since it her middle name. She's an intern." He said, beaming with pride, all while not knowing he was telling them both new and old information that they had learned from the night before. Ridley smiled, trying not to seem like she was a deer in headlights, although that's how she felt.
"Nice to meet you Dr. Ward, I'm looking forward to working with you." She smiled, trying to act polite and pretend this was the first time they had met. It turned out to be very hard.
"Yeah you too. Dr., did you say you were heading to the OR board? Because I wanted to check when my next surgery is. Maybe you could show me the way?" He said, trying to think of an excuse to get her alone so they could talk. He could see the panic in her eyes, but he didn't care. She had some serious explaining to do. A singer? Some singer she was.
"Yes, I was and I'd be happy to show the way." She turned to her father, still in panic mode. "Bye Dad. I've got to go and see Mom, but I'll come and find you later alright?" She asked, not waiting for a response. She could tell her Dad was starting to catch on and her flight or fight response kicked in. But who was she fighting? Her dad or Mason? "Love you." She said as she stretched up to kiss his cheek, then motioned for Mason to follow her out the door.
As soon as they exited the staff room, she pulled him into the nearest elevator. She made sure it was empty before pressing the stop button to prevent anyone from coming in and hearing them. "What are you doing here?" She demanded ignoring the look on his face. Clearly he was as shocked by the encounter as she was.
"I told you last night. I got new job which was the truth, unlike the name you gave me Lexie?" He said for emphasis, although he would never admit he actually found this whole thing quite amusing.
"I didn't lie!" She protested. "I just prefer being called Ridley or Rid rather than Lexie, that's not me... It's someone else…" She said, thinking of the Aunt she never knew. "Anyway that's not… You get that we need to forget about what happened last night, right?" She said getting right to the point instead of continuing to ramble, in fear that she might reveal to much about herself.
"I don't see why, it's not like anyone is going to figure it out." He said, not seeing what she was getting at. She stared at him, but he only shrugged. "What?"
"Are you serious? You're an attending and I'm your intern, not to mention you work with both my parents plus people who consider me as their niece!" She rambled, trying to get the consequences of their actions through his head.
"Well, yeah, I get that but there's one thing you're forgetting." He said as he moved closer to her, pushing her against the wall. She gasped and wanted desperately to try to push him off, but she couldn't make her arms do it. She didn't want to.
"Oh and what is that?" She exhaled, trying to be strong rather than being drawn in by this clearly heated moment.
"This." He said as he passionately kissed her. She quickly returned the kiss with just as much heat. However, much to her dismay, a few moments later he broke the kiss and pressed the button so he could walk out of the door, leaving her to watch him walk away.
"Oh no." She muttered, knowing this wouldn't end well for anyone.
