A Conversation
by: Kitsanken
"Don't you like me?" Her eyebrows drew together in a frown.
"Of course I do." He wished he were anywhere else at the moment.
"Then why?" There was a plaintive note in her voice.
"Why what?" His mind calculated the distance to the door, his only immediate escape route.
"You never show it." A silent plea filled her expressive eyes as she shifted closer.
"Sure I do." The door was now too far. Maybe the window? Who cares if they were on the third floor. It wasn't as if the fall could kill him.
"Really." One eyebrow rose in sardonic disbelief.
"Of course." He smirked, but kept a wary eye on her fist clenched around the worn handle of her favourite wrench.
"Could've fooled me." Her hand twitched, but didn't rise from her side.
"I let you live, didn't I?" He was growing bored of the conversation.
"Oh yes, how romantic." This was accompanied by an expressive eye roll.
"You'd prefer the alternative?" One eyebrow rose mockingly.
"Oh, you sweet talker, you." Her narrowed eyes held a mildly malicious glint.
"You expected anything different?" He laced his hands behind his head and leaned back.
"No, not really." She shrugged and moved away from him, placing her wrench on the table.
"Good. I'd hate to disappoint." His eyes followed her as she moved across the room towards the door.
"You're just as bad as him." She huffed angrily as she pulled her jacket on.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" He was on his feet again, advancing on her with clenched fists.
"Whatever you want it to." To her credit she didn't back down in the face of his growing anger.
"Che. Whatever." He spun away and folded his arms across his chest.
"Don't pout. You look ridiculous." Her laughter was barely contained.
"Stop comparing me to him." He didn't bother trying to hide the petulant note in his voice.
"Might be easier if you weren't currently wearing his face." The door slammed shut before he could retaliate.
A/N: First fic in a LONG time. Didn't quite turn out as I expected...but oh well. Purposely ambiguous with a few hints and clues as to the identities of the characters.
