Luminescence

The closer to the light you draw...

...the darker your shadow becomes.

No... No... No! It can't be! You look behind you and see that it's still there, stalking you like its prey. No matter how fast you run, it's still there – that hideous, black monster that accompanies you wherever you go, mirrors your every movements.

Soon you begin to realize that you can't get rid of it. It's a part of you that lurks in the depths of your mind. It's the evil that hides behind every corner of your life, watching you, waiting until the day it can strike.

You turn around now. You glare at it in futile abhorrence. It grins back at you. It knows you don't know what to do. It knows that you're weak. It knows it can easily overpower you. It reaches out a hand to you. All you have to do is take it, and it'll all be over. It won't have to follow you anymore; you'll be a part of it.

You start to extend your appendage to it. It smiles even wider. Something nags at the back of your mind, though. It's the little voice that tells you that this is wrong. It tells you that you can't do this. That in doing this, it would win. So you yank your hand back and spin around quickly, trying to outrun it again.

You see a light up ahead. Joy overcomes your senses as you realize that this may be the way that you can finally destroy it. You run faster and faster toward it. You bask in the warmth that it brings you. In overconfident delight, you turn to face it. To your surprise and great dismay, it isn't gone. It's far from it. It's become ten times as dark and formidable as it was before. Your heart sinks in your chest.

It towers above you now, a wicked grin spreading across its face. It lays one of its hands on your shoulder. It's as cold as ice. You look up into its eyes and see a reflection of your own – glittering amber orbs that burn like fire on its hideous face.

It leans over and whispers in your ear. "Ian."

Okay, if you didn't get the symbolism, the black thing following him was his shadow, and his shadow represented the evil that lurks inside of him. The light he followed is when he defies his parents and emancipates himself. It's when he becomes good, so to speak. All this story is saying is that no matter how good Ian becomes, there's always going to be a part of him somewhere inside that's evil. It was the way he was raised. People tend to forget that.
