They escape under the pretext of scouting a perimeter. They find a spot where the ground is covered with a soft layer of leaves and lie down on his coat so they don't get dirty. She closes her eyes and pulls him close to her. The smell of rum is on them both. He moans softly into her ears. He kisses her neck hungrily. He wants more. Finally he has her the way he's always wanted, and yes it's as good as he thought it would be. Still he wants more. This is empty. She keeps her eyes closed as he looks down at her. He catches her breathless mouth with his. They have to be quick or the others will worry, but he doesn't want to. He wants to take his time with her. Like the sea, she needs, nay deserves to be explored fully. But he takes what he can get, like a pirate should. She doesn't look at him at all. This is empty for her. She doesn't want a lover. Not so soon after . . . he pushes the thought of him away. Guilt has no place in the life of a pirate. He loses all thought of where they are. He loses all consideration of what this is. He loses himself in her completely. He collapses next to her, hoping to rest a moment lying close to her. Just one moment of intimacy. But she wastes no time and starts to get dressed. "We should get back," she says as if prompting him to also get dressed. "Aye," he says because for once he has no witty comeback, no charming innuendo. He feels empty. As he shakes the leaves from his coat, he steals a glance at her. Her eyes are open but she doesn't look at him. He wonders why why she's doing this with him. Perhaps she needs the distraction. Perhaps she actually has feelings for him and doesn't want to admit it. Perhaps she needs to fill a hole in her heart. Perhaps it's all of those things, perhaps it's none. He doesn't know. He wants to say something but he doesn't. Words would make it real. But what is real in this place? If they left this place of imagination, this god-forsaken place, would it have been real? If he said something this (whatever this was) would end. He follows her back to camp. He keeps his air of confidence and smugness. He doesn't want this to end. He's afraid this is the only way he will ever have her. He's pirate, he has to live in the moment. In the end, this is just another notch in his mast. He is empty and unsatisfied but he's hooked.
