A Ghost of Someone
In the voice of An-mei Hsu
Raised in a maze of cold hallways,
Left with those whom I feared,
Praying for her return always,
Though she never appeared.
A ghost, they said: she had no face,
Something lost, forbidden,
Vanished, cast out without a trace,
I was left only her voice.
Familiar sound, forgotten dream,
My only memory,
However distant she may seem,
Somehow I remember
Her leaving on that painful day-
My darkest memory,
And my own wound, so slow to fade-
My mark, my scar, my curse.
To see her here in front of me,
Dark shadow for a face,
Is to be wrapped in mystery,
And longing to know her.
So unreal she seems to me,
Though I know who she is,
And however close she may be,
I can't truly know her
For however close my mother is to me,
She will always be
A ghost to me.
