Dean sighs, half asleep. The feelings of warmth, safety, love surrounding him. His eyes are closed and he feels relaxed. The gentle brush of a feather across his cheek sinks him deeper towards sleep at the same time as it brings a soft smile to his lips.

He almost misses the quick and light press of lips to his temple, but he's just alert enough to be aware and for the panicked thought of abandonment to cross his mind. He gropes blindly, seeking an arm, a hand . . . anything to keep Cas here.

"Sssh, just rest," Castiel's voice sounds infinitely patient, like Castiel has already worked out where his troubled thoughts will lead him. Another soft kiss to his temple is followed by the feel of Castiel's body behind him, Castiel's arm over him, a solid presence holding them together.

Dean feels the tension lift a little, allows his body to contemplate the need for sleep, but he's not ready to give in to sleep yet, not able to trust that Castiel won't be gone when he wakes. "Rest, Dean, I'm here," Castiel murmurs, so close now Dean can feel the soft puff of air against his ear and neck and he wants to let go and trust that Castiel will take care of him this once.

"Always, Dean, not just this once," Castiel's voice rumbles. The lure of the painkillers, the exhaustion of the fight, the emptiness inside that threatens to overwhelm, but instead Dean follows the tender touch of a feather drifting across his cheek. He follows it down into the healing sleep that his body craves.
