A Proper Goodbye

Disclaimer: Doctor Who is older than I am. Just saying.

A.n. This is in tribute to the beautiful Mary Tamm who passed away over the summer. Rest In Peace.

The Eleventh Doctor was breaking the rules. Not only was he crossing his own time stream, he was going back to Gallifrey. It was wrong and he knew it, but a few days ago he had (somehow, he wasn't really sure) recived a letter from someone named 'John', informing the Doctor that Romana had passed away after using her regenerations to save some planet. That really meant that he was the last of the time lords now.

He was careful to materialize precisely, right next to where the TARDIS picked up her biological signal. He wasn't sure how he'd managed to make it to Gallifrey in the first place but he was going to go with it.

"Hello!" A small feminine called and when he poked is head out the door he saw her. Her brown hair was still curled in ringlets and she was wearing a pale pink dress while waving at him.

"Hello there." He called back as he began walking over to her. His heart caught in his throat. She was about five years old by human standards and was playing in the dirt.

"What is your name?" She requested and he shook his head. Always inquisitive, he'd nearly forgotten about that.

"What's your name?" He deflected the question as he sat down next to her and helped build her a dirt castle. She beamed at him.

"My name's Romanadvoratrelundar." She answered and the doctor laughed.

"That's quite a mouthful." He stated and she nodded solemnly.

"But you, and you alone Mr bowtie man, may call me Romana." Romana stated. He smiled, at least she appreciated the bowtie. He guessed this was the reason she had fought his fourth self for so long about her name.

"Romana. It's very pretty." She smiled again.

"Thank you Mr bowtie man." She turned her head towards the citadel and sighed. He assumed that was the cue for her to be going home. He bounced up onto his feet and began brushing dirt off of himself.

"Well Romana. I'm afraid I must be going." He announced and before he could blink she had her little arms thrown around his shoulders and was squeezing him. He balanced himself then hugged back.

"I want a proper goodbye and I'm not letting go until I get one." He hadn't realized that she had been born stubborn.

"Alright then. Goodbye Romana." He stated and unhooked her arms. He pressed a kiss to the top of her forehead.

"You'll always be the noblest Romana of them all." He added and stood up.

"Goodbye." She replied while he opened the doors to the TARDIS. He waved and watched as she went running off to the citadel.
