I Trust You To Protect Me
"Harry, be careful." I hear myself saying as Harry walks towards the mouth cave. Harry turns around to face me, and again I see his father's face smiling back at me.
"I trust you to protect me, Sirius." It's almost a joke, Harry's twenty now, a fully qualified wizard, an auror, and the Boy Who Lived. I doubt he needs any protection. But he doesn't know how often his father said those same words. And how often I failed to. The time in the Forbidden Forest comes to mind. James had suffered an "accident" during the Gryffindor- Slytherin Quidditch match. He caught the Snitch, but he fell on his right side. His arm and at least half his ribs had been broken. Madam Pomfrey had wanted him to stay in the hospital wing overnight, but as it was a full moon, and as this is James "Prongs" Potter we're talking about, he sneaked out. We were all happy to see him, and continued with our original plan to explore farther into the forest. We found an Acromantula nest and I jokingly suggested taking one back to the castle – Snape loathed spiders – and James thought it would be tremendously funny. Peter – ugh, Wormtail – was berating him about how the Acromantula could hatch and kill him. James replied with The Comment.
"I trust Sirius to protect me."
Then he lifted an egg up on his antlers. Halfway back to the castle, the thing burst and the Acromantula nearly took off James's head. Moony saved him that time – I failed.
I watch him explore ahead of me. He looks exactly like James from the back. I gasp as he bangs his head on a jutting rock and falls backwards.
"Ow." He says, rubbing his forehead. He grins up at me. "Don't do that, Sirius, you look like you've seen a ghost."
He has Lily's eyes, so exactly the same that it's creepy. Shades of bright greens that almost glow. So trusting.
And, of course, there was Halloween night.
"I trust you to protect me, Sirius."
1 It took so much convincing on my part for James to switch to Wormtail. I didn't suspect him, and I can't picture James doing that either. He was always such a noble guy. Every year, he'd give Snape "Another chance to just ignore us", giving the git a clean slate every damn year. More then he deserved.
Even after Remus and Harry and Dumbledore and everyone who apologized for locking me in that hell-hole Azkaban assured me time after time that I wasn't to blame for Lily and James's deaths, I can't help but feel that it's my fault.
"Come on guys, it's perfect! Peter's going into hiding too, and the Death Eaters will be looking for me first."
"James, I'm your best friend. Would I ever do anything to hurt you?"
"Okay, Sirius. I trust you."
And then there was the time when they named me Harry's godfather.
"I've trusted you to protect me, Sirius, and Lily, so I trust you to be the best person to protect Harry if – well, you know."
"Okay, Sirius, it looks harder then it is." Harry calls from across a gap in the rocks. "Just jump. Trust me."
"Trust me."
I trust you, Harry. I trust James. I trust Lily. I trust Remus and Dumbledore and McGonagall and Hagrid and Nearly Headless Nick.
But I don't know if I trust me.
A/N: Okay, I have no idea where this came from. It sort of relates to "James's Face and Lily's Eyes"…or at least, it was originally. I'm not quite sure now. Ah, well. Review please! Feedback is my friend!
