A rustle, a twig snapping, then the galloping of horses hooves.

I ducked my head and backed into the safety of the overgrown bushes. A teenager on a horse trotted by, looking over his shoulder. I wasn't sure where I was or what I was doing here. The last thing I remembered was Big Fat Riley pushing me into hole in the ground, for sticking a piece of paper that said 'hug me!' on the back of his jumper. I sniggered at the memory. Mrs Bloomer had wrapped him into a tight bear hug at lunch. I walked further backwards into the bush.

Something must've alerted the boy of my presence, because he whipped his head around, and looked straight at me.

"I can see you", he said.

Crap, I tried to dig myself further into the bush. He leapt off the horse and walked towards me. He drew his sword, and put the tip at my cloak-covered throat.

"Show yourself", he hissed.

I pushed the sword point away from my neck, wiped away the trickle of blood that it had drawn, and stepped into the light.

"Who are you?" He had an accent, a light, lilting tone. I pulled off the hood of my cloak, letting my dark hair hang around my body.

"You – You're a girl". He looked horrified.

"Yeah, and you're a boy." I said the word slowly, as if talking to a four year old.

"What are you doing here?" He ignored my last comment.

"It's a free … forest, isn't it?"

He laughed, but it was a cold, heartless laugh.

"Women belong with a man, in a home".

This I snorted at.

"For your information, I am a self – righteous feminist".

"A what?" I didn't get to answer. He pulled me by the arm, back into the bushes, and smacked his horse on the rump. I couldn't hear them at first. Six men with swords, crossbows and full body armour raced past us, following the startled horse. I looked at the boy. He put a finger to his lips. It was about half an hour before he got up out of a crouch and pulled me to my feet. By this stage, I couldn't feel my legs, so this was a bit of a problem.

"Where am I?"I asked.

"There will be time for questions later. Follow me."
