A/N: Written for the 29th November set of prompts in the NGF forum's thread Prompts, oh, Prompts. The pairing was given, as was the quote (said by Max Muller), and four prompts. (botany, clasp, stalk, circle)
Many thanks to my amazing betareader mew-tsubaki.
butterflies searching for the free skies
sitting in a garden
sipping on drinks
searching for something
in the other's eyes
and finding it
it was that type of summer
warm
sweaty
hot
it was that type of summer
closeness
carelessness
cousin-ness
"a flower cannot blossom without sunshine"
Victoire whispered into Molly's ear
and Molly saw the sunshine in her eyes
"and a man cannot live without love"
Victoire whispered into Molly's other ear
and Molly loved Victoire
and lived
"who said that?"
"I did"
"it's true"
"it is"
they were like a pair of
butterflies
(eyelashes fluttering like wings)
(clothes colourful)
(fragile, fragile, fragile)
but when they were together
they could fly
so maybe
maybe they were nothing but
half of a butterfly, when separated
and only one, when together
they were always in the garden
"come dance with me"
Molly whispered into Victoire's ear
it was night
dark
but Molly's face was pale
and shone like the moon
they slipped out
clad in nothing but nightgowns
and freedom
the grass was wet under their feet
and they danced in circles
and felt like ballerinas
when Victoire watched Molly
it was botany
she was an explorer
and every part of Molly
was an unknown land
her eyes were herself wandering across
the country called Mollyland
and Molly's skin
was the desert that no one
had visited
and Molly's eyes
were the oceans in which no one
had dared to dive
and Molly's hair
was the jungle that no one
had entered
and all she wanted was to explore more
but it all was destroyed
and they felt that they should have known it
been prepared
because a ballerina always breaks down
eventually
and a butterfly always dies
too soon
and a discoverer always
run into an obstacle
"you are cousins"
"you should know better"
"it is disgusting"
and Victoire cried in Molly's hair
and the moon was hiding underneath a cloud
and no one was dancing on the lawn in the night again
days years minutes passed
and all of them were filled
with screaming nothing
their eyes would meet
occasionally
but they wouldn't look at each other
their hands would touch
occasionally
but they wouldn't feel each other
"ah, Molly, care for a kiss? We're only cousins, you know, eh"
it hurt
"c'mon Victoire, you don't have any boundaries left, sure?"
it pained
weeks months seconds passed
and nothing changed
and they slowly broke
more and more
until they were so shattered that a puff of wind
would have completely destroyed them
that's probably why
the decision was so easy to take
to go back
because, they could break
or they would break
or they would be mended
there was no other option
"are you, er, stalking me?"
"no, I've missed you."
silence, then "same here."
they walked away together
their hands clasping each other
and their fingers
left imprints on the other's skin
a crystal clear promise
of a future
together
they could do this
as long as they had each other
they weren't giving up
again
never again
