I don't know where this came from. Kirk seems OOC to me, but it bugged me until I got it written, and once I got it written I figured I might as well post it!

Star Trek belongs now and forever to the genius that was Gene Roddenberry.

"Captain, I must insist that you visit medbay before you retire for the night. I find it incredible that you have not yet collapsed from the injuries you have sustained."

"Spock, I have to visit medbay to retire for the night. I still don't have quarters aboard the ship." Acting Captain James T. Kirk watched the medley of expressions flicker across the Commander's face in amusement. Had the man really forgotten that Kirk was for all intents and purposes a stowaway? Twice over, in fact!

"Then it should prove most efficient Captain as all reasonable logic dictates that you have surpassed the limits of human endurance." Well, never let it be said that Vulcanians couldn't roll with the punches. Hopefully that would serve them well in the years, and quite likely centuries to come, while they recovered from the loss of Vulcan.

Jim eyed the stoic man thoughtfully. He seemed to be holding up well. Well, better than before anyway. He couldn't help but wonder if it was partly because a purely human need for vengeance had been fulfilled, but also couldn't bring himself to ask. The rest of the bridge crew had already changed shifts, and Scott seemed to think that he could get them up to full impulse power without the ship rattling apart.

Command decision then. Vulcanians had a higher stamina than humans did. The science officer hadn't been beaten to a pulp three times in the last twenty-four hours. The ship was critical, but stable. And he wanted to check on Captain Pike anyway. With a satisfied nod he motioned for the pointy-eared bastard to follow him.

"Mr. Spock, you've made an assumption that is in error. Human endurance is subjective. Reasonable logic can only tell you what the average human is capable of. And if the Enterprise were crewed by average humans, we never would have been able to accomplish everything we have. Sulu showed his evasive maneuvers skills at Vulcan. Chekov is unmatched at navigation. Scotty can make a transporter all but sit up and sing! My idea was idiotic, but it was the only plan we had that Earth would survive. And we couldn't have pulled it off without your logic. Hell, without you in general. I really don't think that ship would've let anybody else pilot it."

"Be that as it may Captain-"

"Enough Spock. You flinched. After what you had just been through, anyone would have. But you regrouped and came back. When logic should have dictated otherwise. That's what emotions exist for, Spock. They push us beyond the limits that logic dictates should exist. Accomplishing the impossible is entirely possible when you get a group of skilled individuals together and get them to fight not only for a good cause, but also for a good person. We weren't going to let Earth be destroyed too. And we sure as hell weren't going to let a good man like Captain Pike be held by that insane bastard, Nero. Given that information, the rest of our escapades just follow naturally. One might even say logically. "

He turned outside the medbay doors and looked his puzzled first officer in the eyes. "Schedule a meeting of the department heads, acting or otherwise, for eight hours from now. Until then, Mr. Spock, you have command."

Fascinating, Spock thought as he watched the young Acting Captain disappear into the chaos of Dr. McCoy's domain. Of all the characteristics he had attributed to Jim Kirk, humility was not one he had expected.

I have a couple of other misc. oneshots that hve been bouncing around in my head since watching the movie...They'll probably get posted here too if they ever firm up into something publishable.
