Chapter Two

I can touch her! I can sense them…I know they're all out there…it'll only be a matter of time… I can wait… I can wait… I can wait… … …

Five grown men advanced slowly, in a semi-circle surrounding the boy. On closer examination, past the full-metal hauberks, 14-foot glaives and uniformed hair, the men were all sweating.

"C'mon Lee! You can't win. There's nowhere else to run!" The Captain, identified only by a thin band of red on his shirt, called out.

Presumably, the boy known as Lee, backed another step. And heard for the first time the loud, slamming rush of the waterfall behind him.

Gulping, he shook his head and clutched even closer to his chest in what appeared to be a pile of clothes.

"No! I need the Fyer's permission! He WILL listen to me now that I've got his Crest!"

The five men all took a step forward, their nervousness showing in the way their eyes darted wildly to what the boy was clutching, and each of them calculating whether they would be able to tackle him before he jumped.

"Lee! We'll forgive you this time if you'll give us back the Water Crest! It's not as important as you think it is! Not worth dying for, Lee!" The commander tried desperately to reason with him. But, his men inched closer to the boy.

As they got closer, and closer…Lee backed further and further…

Suddenly, Lee stopped. Uncertain, the men stopped too.

"Tell Ma I did this for her. While YOU did nothing." The last comment was directed with scorn at the Captain. "Goodbye, Da."

With the final look on Lee's face a perfect mystery, he tensed his legs and jumped backwards.

Plowing down into the depths…faster and faster…the five men above rushed to the edge and looked down, watching, as Lee plummeted like a stone…finally…a splash…and silence.

As the five men made their way back towards the Fyer, the only detail out of the ordinary was the tears silently streaming down the Captain's face.
