"…And then keep walking"
The sky turned bluish in the early dawn, vague shadows started to form under the trees and the humming power lines. A shape appeared over the ridge and plodded slowly through the field, unaware of the road.
The day passes, and the next day showed the man still approaching. Limping, stumbling, still forging awkwardly through the field. He hadn´t stopped at night.
Hours later he passed under the power lines, and began a long, slow, diagonal crossing. His ribs could easily be traced through the rotting clothes, he was burned, skin peeling an open sores. His nails, hair and beard were long and unkempt. He rasped as he breathed, dried mouth and swollen tongue unable to moisten the harsh air and dust.
Stumbling, he fell to his knees, and continued crawling, it´s hard to keep your balance without feet, on ragged, blood-caked stumps, extremities lost on the trail, their remains spread equally across cities and deserts on the unendurable walk.
Dirt fell from him, having collected for years, finally shaken off. It was made up of sand from the Sahara Desert, peat from Northern bogs, dead leaves from the Amazon forest, salt from the Dead Sea and endless other places in between.
His arms gave out as the fourth day began. He dragged himself, scraping the skin off his body and breathing the dust forced into his mouth, clogging his airways and blinding dehydrated eyes whose lids and lashed had been worn away by countless rains years before.
By noon, his brain had shut down, unconscious but still moving by some force other than his own. He still inched painfully along at dusk. Later, when the moonlight revealed him, he had finally stopped moving. Limbs worn to the bone and past were finally beyond the power of the woman that bade him "Walk until your feet bleed, and then keep walking".
Author´s Note: The man, of course, is Stryker. He shows up in X Men II, so he can´t have died, although I can´t figure out why not. Sheer exhaustion should have done him in. If anyone knows, please tell me.
