Chapter 1: Define time

Kevin was sitting on a bench at a train station. He had spent the day at a friend's birthday party. "Party sounds so stupid." he thought "Teenagers playing card games and video games with friends is not the same as kids dressing up as fairies or firemen and eating cake, yet we use the same word for both." It was just past midnight. The train station was really small. It only had 2 platforms. The next train wouldn't be coming until half an hour later. While Kevin was drowning in his thoughts he felt the wind blowing against his cheek. It was really cold, every time he exhaled a little cloud came out of his mouth. The only lights in the area were the weak street lights that were placed on the platforms. The station was an island of light in a great ocean of darkness. Kevin could hear a train coming, he knew it wouldn't be stopping at the station. Kevin looked up and saw an old man standing at the platform on the other side of the train tracks. The man was staring at him. Kevin tried to ignore him, when the incoming train passed. The train was quite long, but it was going really fast and it had passed in a matter of seconds. When the train had passed the old man was gone. Kevin was a bit creeped out. He stood up from the bench and starting walking around to warm up a little bit. After a while he sat down again. Since he left his friend's house he hadn't seen a single soul apart from the old man that appeared to have been vanquished by the passing train. Kevin pulled out his phone to see if someone had texted him, because he was getting kind of lonely and really bored. His phone couldn't find a mobile network and suddenly turned itself off. Kevin knew his phone had plenty battery life left, so he tried to turn it on again, but nothing happened. Kevin put his phone back in his pocket. He started to feel hungry. He could see there was a vending machine at the other platform. Kevin walked to the edge of the platform and jumped down/span, he didn't hear a train coming, so he thought it would be safe to cross the train tracks. He started walking to the other side but his left foot got caught behind something and he smacked down on the ground. He heard a train approaching and hastily tried to get his foot loose from whatever it got caught by, but in his panic he jumbled up his leg and got even more stuck. The train was quickly approaching. Kevin started screaming and crying at the same time and he closed his eyes. He could hear the train approaching. The sound of metal on metal was getting louder and louder and then, suddenly, it stopped. Kevin couldn't hear anything but his own breath. "Am I dead?" he thought "Am I in heaven?" He carefully opened his eyes and less than a meter away he saw the front of the train. It had stopped right in front of him. The head lights of the train illuminated his surrounding area. He saw his foot was caught behind a couple of rocks from the ballast. He got his foot loose and noticed that he had sprained his ankle. Still in shock he sauntered to the other platform and climbed on it. He looked around. He saw the train driver sitting in the front of the train, he wasn't moving a muscle. He just sat there, motionless staring into the distance. Kevin didn't have a clue about what was going on. He was extremely confused. He looked up in to the sky and saw a flock of birds just hanging there. They weren't flying nor flapping their wings nor making noise. Kevin walked towards a bench and sat down. He let his head rest on his hands and started crying./p
