This is the story of how I escaped death.
It seemed like a perfect day, sun-shining high in the sky, not a cloud in sight. Yet, ultimately, this was my demise thinking this day was perfect. It only took a few minutes, but these minutes were pain ridden. The year was 1993; I was in the middle of college trying to pay off the debt that comes with it. I had a part time job working as a chef at a nearby Chuck E. Chesses. I had always liked kids, the sound of their laughter just kept me going through the day. Whenever they cheered at the pizza coming to their table, I smiled knowing that I baked that and that kids were going to enjoy it. Anyway, on the night of October 16 the manager said I had to work late in order to clean up the place. I agreed because it was a weekend.
I worked on cleaning the kitchen three others cleaned the main area while my boss recounted today's profits. However, unknown to any of the five of us, there was a sixth person. It turned out this man was Bobby Fisher, a man who had been fired only weeks earlier. He entered the main play area and shot the three who were cleaning there. I did not hear these shots because he had a silencer. When he entered the kitchen on my right, he made sure I could see him. Before I could even think because I was in a lot of shock, he fired a bullet into my lower jaw knocking me onto the ground where I could tell I was alive but didn't dare to move.
I waited for nearly ten minutes just lying there with my eyes closed to prevent any suspicion that I was still alive. I heard the back door close; I waited for five minutes to make sure that he wasn't trying to draw me out. When I thought the coast was clear, I got up to go to the back door, when I spotted that my boss too, had died. I also noticed that the small vault was opened with at least 10,000 dollars missing. I looked out the back when I noticed that that Bobby was walking away with a backpack, which obviously contained the money. I pulled out my cell phone and called the cops where he was busted in the next twenty minutes. I earned a key to the city that week for "Justice for all" and to this day, I work at the Chuck E. Chesses where this happened but not as a chef, but as a security guard.
