Martha leaves the Doctor in the console room and walks down the hall toward her room. She stops when she sees a door she's never seen before. It is mahogany with a rose carving at eye height. The rose looks very similar to the one in Beauty and the Beast. Martha reaches for the door knob and turns it, entering. The room is a mess. The bed at the center of the room is unmade with both sides ruffled. The dresser has makeup and all sorts of nicknacks spread out on it. Cloths are carelessly flung around the room. The window shows a part of London Martha is unfamiliar with. As Martha walks further into the room, she realizes that there are both woman and men's cloths. On the right, there is mostly a woman's, but on the left, there are several Oxford shirts and ties flung on a very comfortable looking chair. On the bedside table to the left, there is an assortment of gadgets in various states on repair.
Martha then spots several picture frames on the bedside table to the right. She gently picks one up. In it there is the Doctor dressed in his tuxedo with a blonde women posed next to him with her arm in his. She is in a beautiful blue gown. The Doctor is smiling down at her with a smile Martha has never seen before. His hand not on the arm wrapped around her arm, is covering her hand. The women is looking up at him smiling back at him. Martha gently puts that frame down and picks up another. This one is of a different man and the same women. This man is older and is wearing a black leather coat, black trousers, and a dark purple jumper. In this one the women is in jeans and a T-shirt. They are both smiling. She then picks up another. This one is of the Doctor again with the women, an older women, and another man. They are all wearing Christmas popper hats, except the older women.
"You found her room," the Doctor's voice says from behind Martha. She whips around quickly to see the Doctor. His face was sad and lonely. His whole demeanor was different from when she had seen him several minutes ago in the console room. Then he had been happy and giddy like a child, but now, he looked about three times his age.
"I- I'm sorry," she stammers.
He walks toward her and takes the picture from her hand. His face still sad.
"Ah! Christmas!" he says, finally breaking the sadness with a smiling. He shows her the picture and points to the older woman. "That's Rose's mum, Jackie, her ex-boyfriend, Mickey, then Rose and myself. Jackie hated those paper hats. Refused to wear it for the picture."
Martha nods. He puts the picture back in its place on the bedside table.
Martha finally speaks up, "Who is the older man in some of the pictures?"
The Doctor stares at the pictures on the table. "He is… Well. He's me."
"What? That's not you!" Martha states, surprised.
"He is. Time Lords go through this process when we are dying called regeneration. About a year and a half ago, give or take a couple of months, I saved Rose's life, but my previous body died." He explains.
"You just… have a new face… all of a sudden." Martha stammer.
"Yeah," he says.
"That's… weird," Martha manages to say while still processing the new information about the Doctor.
"It is for you! I mean. One face? Now, that, is weird!" the Doctor rambles. "You get what? Eighty to ninety years. I can get thousands! If I'm careful. Though with the way things are going now…"
The Doctor continues to ramble about life spans and different species, but Martha just tunes him out. Instead, she continued to stare at the pictures. In all of them the Doctor and Rose looked so happy and she realized just how this blonde woman had touched the Doctor's life.
