Sara was isolating stains on a sheet taken from a crime scene when Grissom strolled into the layout room. "Looks like we've got multiple deposits here," she said, without looking at him.
Grissom gazed at her for a moment, and then said, "Come see me after work today."
Sara, still concentrating on the sheet in front of her, curled her lips in a smile. "Is that a request or an order?"
Grissom moved closer to Sara, putting his mouth mere inches from the curve of her ear. Speaking in a husky voice, then said, "Please come see me after work. I have something to show you."
Sara's smile spread into a smirk as she replied, "I bet you do." She turned to Grissom, and noted that he had that boyish look of anticipation he always got when he was about to start a new experiment. Not able to resist that look, Sara's smile widened to reveal the gap in her teeth. Grissom merely quirked an eyebrow at her, then left as quickly as he had appeared.
Sara sighed and returned to her task at hand. She spent the rest of the day cataloguing evidence, but her mind would not let this new puzzle rest. She and Grissom had tentatively begun seeing each other outside of work a few months ago. They had quickly fallen into comfortable habits that suited them perfectly, such as spending quiet evenings at his place catching up on the latest forensic journals, their fingers intertwined as they discussed whether or not computer modeling could accurately represent blood splatter patterns. Sara could not remember another romantic relationship that had seemed this effortless. No need to hide her voracious interests with someone who shared them, so what could he possibly have in store for her? Sara's quick mind established then demolished various scenarios as nothing that fit the peculiarities of their relationship. "He probably just has a new butterfly," she muttered to herself as she drove her Tahoe out of the lab's parking lot and headed towards Grissom's townhouse.
Arriving shortly thereafter, Sara got out of the car only to find Grissom waiting outside for her. She grinned at his eager demeanor. "This had better be good," she said as she approached him.
Grissom merely smiled back at her, rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet. When Sara reached him, he leaned forward and gave her a quick kiss. "It is," he replied, taking her hand and leading her inside.
Once inside, Grissom made Sara close her eyes as he led her further into the apartment. "Okay," he said. "Open."
Sara blinked her eyes open, only to see the wall of Grissom's living room. She took a quick inventory, but didn't notice anything amiss. Books. CDs. Specimens. Stereo. She panicked slightly. What was she supposed to see? Grissom was looking at her expectantly. She turned to face him. "Griss, I don't…"
He merely kept smiling at her, then pointedly turned his gaze back to the shelving. Sara followed his look, but still didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Except for the fact that a few shelves on the right side were completely bare. "The empty shelves?" Sara said, hopefully.
Grissom's widening grin told her she guessed correctly. His face quickly sobered, however, as he dropped his gaze to their still clasped hands. "I thought that since you were starting to spend so much time over here, you might like some space for a few of your books, journals…"
"Oh, Griss," Sara exclaimed, as tears unexpectedly stung her eyes. The gesture was somehow so perfectly romantic coming from Grissom. She wrapped her arms around him. "Thank you," she whispered.
He merely nodded, before claiming her mouth for a kiss.
