Prologue: Of the Past

A brown-haired girl sits in the corner, her arms wrapped around her legs, watching the chess game. "Seto... good luck..." she whispers. "Even though... even though...."

Even though, if he won, she would not go with them. Even though, if he won, she would be left alone.

The orphanage children had been expecting the visit for a while. Only yesterday, Seto had told her, "I'm going to challenge him."

"What for?"

"For me and Mokuba. I don't... I don't want to stay here. And I want Mokuba to grow up outside of here."

"But what about me?"

"If I make him adopt you, too, we couldn't get married."

She blushed. "Don't say that so easily."

"And when I grow up, I'll come and marry you."

"S-Seto! Besides, someone will probably adopt me by then. What'd you do when I'm not here?"

"I'll find you."

"How?"

"Doesn't matter, I just will. You'll see."

"And what if you don't?"

"Stop asking hard questions!"

She laughed sadly. Bitterly. "Sorry, Seto. But I don't think it'll work out like that."

"You have to, because it will!"

"It will!" Mokuba repeated, butting against her side. She patted his head absentmindedly.

"Yeah, of course it will," she agreed distractedly. "Wait, what?"

Seto's laugh rang quietly in the room. His blue eyes shone, momentarily dazzling her. "See? Even you agree. That means it'll work out."

"Silly, naive Seto," she muttered, and pouted. "Even you know it wo—"

He covered her mouth with his hand. "Don't say it, you'll jinx it!"

She shook her head at him. "Suit yourself."

And now she watched, with the presence of her best friend at stake.

"Checkmate," the familiar voice says.

She buries her head in her knees, trying to pretend, for just a little longer, that her friends, her Seto and her Mokuba, would stay with her, and not leave her alone.
