She inhaled greedily on her cigarette and watched the smoke waft through the air until it finally dissipated and then she turned her bored expression on the psychiatrist. How many times must they go over the same thing. They had talked about Adam's mother and his sick son of a bitch of a stepfather. She knew what the woman was trying to do. She was trying to get to Adam. Well, good luck to her, she wouldn't succeed. It was her job to protect Adam and she would do it despite all their efforts to break her. Adam was safe now, safe from the migraines and the abuse. He was happy now and she could protect him from all the doctors who wanted to pick her psyche apart to reach him. She understood why they did it. It was their job, after all.
She understood them all, that is to say, except for him. He kept coming back, just like he said he would. What was it about him? He'd been the one to see through Adam and her in the first place. Why hadn't she been able to hide from him. It had all been so easy until he came along. He wanted to reach Adam like the rest of them but it was different, it wasn't his job. His job had been over when she'd dropped the knife and allowed him to take her away. He'd been surprisingly gentle, not at all what she'd expected. She figured as time went on that he would lose interest and she'd be free at last but every month or so he showed up again. He wasn't an alpha male but he had surprising tenacity. What kept him coming back? What was he hiding?
Dodging the psychiatrists was easy. They didn't care, they only did what their training told them. They spouted their psychobabble, getting themselves nowhere Hiding from him was another matter altogether. Dr. Spencer Reid cared and she couldn't understand why. But more importantly, he seemed to understand. She didn't know how long she could keep the barrier up against him. He seemed so innocuous and yet she was afraid he would break through where others had failed and get to Adam which could and would destroy her. She couldn't let that happen. She wouldn't let that happen. Dr. Spencer Reid was a dangerous man. She knew how to deal with dangerous men, didn't she?
