Presented for your perusal: one character study of the wolf prince Kouga, and the feelings he harbors towards the human miko Kagome and the wolf princess Ayame. Please keep in mind, this is my interpretation of the way he feels towards both women, based on what I've seen in the series. It may be somewhat cruel towards Ayame, but that is purely Kouga's attitude, again, based on what I've seen.

Feel free to review with any comments, questions, or constructive criticism. Enjoy!

Kouga contemplates the future of his "relationship" with Kagome, and the feelings of a certain white wolf demon. He's the determined sort; and Kouga will not let himself settle for a "consolation prize."

He watches them, hidden. It's times like this—when that insolent puppy leaves them alone to chase after that doll of earth and bones—that he watches over them. How dare he leave her alone, in danger's way? Naraku could strike at any moment, and he was leaving the most precious, pure creature ever formed, to chase after a walking memory.

When he smelled the dog stalking off, it was then that the wolf prince moved in to watch over the girl. It was his way of proving himself to be the better man; he, at least, would never run away from the woman he loved. He would never leave her willingly in any possible danger.

But he still battled for her heart, in vain. He still fought to prove himself worthy in her eyes.

And so, out of love, protection, and desperation, Kouga was carefully hidden in a nearby tree, watching his beloved Kagome as she sat and chatted with her friend, the demon-slayer.

Should he go down and speak with her? Reassure her that he was here, and would protect her, love her, never leave her? Unfortunately, he'd run the risk of seeing her friends…seeing the gazes of pity they level at him. He can see it in their eyes—he should just give up, admit defeat, and go home. Stagger into the arms of Ayame and realize he can never have what he truly wants.

Kouga narrows his eyes, growling.

Never…

How could he do that? Relinquish all hope of sharing his love with Kagome and accept a poor substitute in return?

He won't have Ayame. She can never be the one he wants, the one he burns for. He hates that damned saintly, resigned air she adopts. Like some day he'll come whimpering to the mountains of the north, tail between his legs.

Kagome may not be a youkai, but she has the noble heart of a true woman. He loves her, and he won't rest until he's proved to Kagome that he's the worthier man. He'll keep chasing her until the bitter end. He will not have a condescending consolation prize foisted upon him. This is a race he cannot—will not—lose.

Good thing I'm so damn fast…

He watches.
