The cold air blew through the night, surrounding anything that it could reach. The small campfire flickered and danced as the wind caressed it, and the single creature that was huddled near the fire shivered in the cold and sniffled as he wiped at his tears. The chameleon gripped a single black hat tightly in his hands and he choked back a sob, closing his eyes tightly as what had happened flashed through his mind.

Rango had never, never, felt so alone in his life… even when he had been just a common house pet. Not even with the shadows dancing around him, trying in vain to keep him company.

All he wanted was his mate back. All he wanted was to have his rattlesnake coiled around him, safe and sound. Not dead!

"W-why…?" Rango choked out, hugging the hat to him. "Why, damn it, why!?" he suddenly shouted, voice cracking only slightly as it went from a whisper to that, and he stood up sharply before falling to his knees, his legs unable to hold his weight and he curled up tighter, his body trembling and shaking violently with the sobs he'd tried so desperately to hold back. "W-why did you have to d-die… J-Jake… damn it, I loved you… I-I… I love you." he whispered to the hat, beyond heartbroken. "Y-you… you promised…"

Finally, he wiped away some of his tears and he looked down at his beloved's hat before making the decision. Standing up shakily, he took his own off, throwing it into the fire in front of him before putting on the rattlesnake's hat, despite how much larger it was than his own.

His hat burned slowly in the fire, but it didn't get a chance to turn to ash as the fire died out from the wind. Rango turned away at this, shoulders trembling still, and he walked away from the fire, tugging his cape tighter around him.

I'll never leave ya behin'… I love ya, Rango, so much… an' I'll always be there t' protect ya. No matter what, I promise.
