It Just Seems Fitting

When Thomas had informed him of his assignment, Jacques just looked at him, not to be intimidating or anything like that, he just felt the question so obvious that his usual quiet would serve well enough. "It just seems fitting." That was what Thomas said before he ran off to take care of something else; there was always something else to occupy the lord of the castle, not uncommonly in connection with a young girl in heavy armor who served as captain of the guard. He wasn't the only one to say that either; Joker and Ace said it as they gave him a vigorous pat on the back, Queen said it before assuring him that he could go to her for advice, and Geddoe...he didn't say it out loud, but Jacques caught the smirk on his face when he thought Jacques wasn't looking; even after over a hundred years of getting used to it, that missing eye still made for a blind spot that someone as observant and quiet as Jacques could make use of. In any event, word made its way around the castle, and those who had at one point or another fought alongside Jacques in some battle or other would comment that it just seemed fitting, that it worked out so well.

"Hey Jacques!" Alia said, Jacques halted and turned to face her; she was in her Karaya Clan clothes again, they fit her much better than the outfit Queen had gotten her while they had to move quietly. "Lot of people are going to be counting on us, aren't they?"

"I suppose so." He'd seen others be assigned to positions similar to this one, given jobs prominent and focused on; he'd seen them go wrong, and the results that came of that. He could deal with that, but this was Alia's first time in that sort of situation. "Nervous?"

"A little, I guess. Queen says not to drink too much soda before hand, so I don't get jittery and mess up, but I could really go for some, you know?" There was a change in her posture, an invitation.

"Afterward, I'll get you some."

"Heh, I'm gonna hold you to that you know? Break your word and I'll have every spirit in the Grasslands cursing your name." Jacques could not say if Aila could make good on that threat, or indeed if anyone could make good on that threat.

"That won't be a concern." It was not because of the threat that he would do as he said he would.

"Goodie!" A little celebratory hop. "Well, I'll be seeing you again pretty soon, make sure you've got it all memorized!"

"Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" Aila said as she stood up in what was meant to be Juliet's tower, and though her performance was stilted and unsure, her eyes regularly glancing at the audience, her voice still had passion in it.

"I am here." To those who listened closely, not the least being the members of a certain mercenary squad, there was a certain joy in Jacque's voice as he looked up at Aila.
