Prologue: a bleak future.

Every day, the void grew larger.

A gigantic, black mass in the speckled sky, it devoured everything it saw.

We knew that soon, it would devour us.

So we waited. Waited for doomsday, waited for the day which our short lives would finally end.

For the hero that never came...

Chapter 1: The door of hope

"Yes?" I gazed into Merlon's deep blue eyes.

I was expecting the whole "The end is near!" spheal from him.

Everyone was.

Since the day the void appeared, he had been calling people to his house.

At first, we didn't know what it was for.

We thought that the void was just an anomaly in the weather, something that would pass.

It never did.

Then the stories came from the people that came out.

This was no storm.

It was the end of all existence, a personification of the devil itself, as some called it.

The dark Prognosticus.

Merlon held out a book. It had a light tannish colour and a star in the center.

"Do you know what this is?"

"The light Prognostics."

My mom had told me stories.

Just that.

Stories.

Not...

Not facts.

"Right. What's its purpose?"

"To counteract the dark Prognosticus. "

I had given up hope on the light Prognostics.

Everyone had.

It taught that a hero would come. Garbed in red, he would save every single universe.

Save him from man whose cloak is a gateway to the stars.

Not that I believed it.

"Yes."

A smile crept up on his face.

He never smiled when he talked to the townsfolk.

Never.

"What?"

He smirked.

"Patch, you just might be our hero."

"WH-Me?"

I was utterly confused. Me? The hero? I was just a lazy bum who worked for Saffron, not a nameless hero of the ages.

Unless…

"Patch. The door of hope has opened once more."
