It's one am. Usually I'd be at home, fast asleep, my head resting on a feathered pillow in the low light of my tanned lamp in my bedroom. It would be quiet, a slight slither of the moonlight would be coming through the gaps in my blinds and maybe some classical music would be playing if I felt like it.
I huff.
My fingers tips teetering on freezing. It's the middle of February, so of course, I've been called into work at this ungodly hour, but even the sickest of people don't sleep now so I should probably be up. I usually love my job, but there's always one thing I don't like about it. It's sick and twisted, it fires up my emotions. It's when it involves children. Having a younger sister myself it always hits home. They're too young and innocent. You'd think having nearly ten years on the force it would be something you used to, but you never do.
I shove my hands in my pocket and block out the police sirens and nudge my way over to Officer Yun, she's a few years older than I am, a deputy. Long brown hair, and in the summer I swear it would turn slightly red on the tips. She looks exhausted and gives me a sombre smile as I approach, her leather jacket wound up tight and scarf locked around her neck. Her eyes are harbouring dark circles underneath and it's striking to see her so, fed up? Officer Yuns forced smile drops as soon as it came and I take my place standing beside her, gathering up the courage to have a look at our Jane Doe down in the marsh.
"No identity yet?" I ask as cooly as I can but I can feel the anger starting to swell in my chest as we draw closer, ducking under the yellow police tape. My boots squelch awfully in the frozen covered grass, nearly a few inches of mud hidden underneath giving them a nice coat of brown
"Sadly not, Farron."
She has no emotion. I can't tell if she's tired or horrified. About a minute later she pats me sluggishly on the back and leaves me to it. The girl is laying exactly where they found her. We're waiting for the forensic team to show up. Bloody bastards are never on time. I gather up the courage and draw into her. Slinking down in the grass to get the best picture I can before she's taken.
She appears to be about eight, maybe nine. She has dirty blonde hair, that looks to be torn at the ends. I raise an eyebrow and brush a little offher face. Her azure eyes are so much like my own it startles me.
Usually, the eyes are what gives away a persons' secrets. If they're scared, guilty, intoxicated, malnourished, happy, it all is exposed through their eyes. I stupidly try and get the same out of her, to find the soul in this little girl, but no. I achieve nothing. I look around the marsh, what a disturbing place in the dark, I can hear the rush of the water and faint traffic from the city nearly a mile away. Why here? Who are you? That's what I've got to figure out.
I take in her outfit, completely normal if I say so. A jean skirt, light blue in colour, flowery leggings underneath, coated in the disgusting mud she was left in, as well as what looks to be blood. A pink top ruffled around the shoulders and shifted slightly, as if someone had tried to pull it off. A hat has been discarded a few feet away, I can barely hold back my growl as I stand up. Officer Yun does nothing as I walk back over to her, just in time for the forensics to get here. We slowly walk back up to the pavement, not saying a word.
"Who called it in?" I ask as we near her car.
"A jogger. He's over there. He didn't know or see anything, or so he says, but I don't really have a reason to believe he's lying." I glance over her shoulder at the ambulance, and there he is. He's tall, lanky with short blonde hair, shaved at the sides, his shins covered in mud and a ghostly look on his face. His running outfit ruined. He appears to have fallen over. I feel bad for the poor fellow. These sights aren't for everyone.
"Everybody lies, Officer."
"Yes, well, we can talk to him soon, don't you worry." She gives me a tired look and offers me a cigarette. I sigh and take one, I don't have an overbearing younger sister hear to tell me not to. I pop it in my mouth and she sets it alight. following suit with her own.
I'm definitely in for a long night.
