To Be Loved

In fifth grade, Percy Jackson had his favorite teacher, Mrs. Donaldson. She taught him a lesson that he lived his life by.

"As long as you know you love two things, your life will be great," she used to say. "But only two, okay? No more than two."

So Percy decided to love two things: his mom, and his toy motorcycle that he liked to play with. Since he was so young, his mom had placed an order for a real one for him when he was old enough.

When he was old enough, Percy really did fall in love with his motorcycle. It was red, with a black lightning bolt down the side. And at that moment, (the one where he received it) Percy determined his two things that were to be loved-his mother, and his motorcycle.

Now, Percy knew he was only supposed to love two things. But he really liked this girl at his school. Her name was Annabeth Chase. And choosing to love her meant kicking out something else. But Percy couldn't do that.

So his life was turned upside down.

There had been an accident near Percy's house. A motorcycle accident. And his mom was in it. She had been admitted to the Frank Hawkins Memorial Hospital immediately, but her chances of survival were very slim.

Percy knew it was all his fault. He had started loving more than two things, and now two of them had been damaged. So Percy made another decision-he would only love his mom and Annabeth from then on.

He visited the hospital soon after the principal delivered him the news at school. When he arrived, he was not expecting to see Annabeth waiting for him by the front desk.

"What are you doing here?" he asked. They had only really known each other for a year, so unless she was visiting someone else, she shouldn't be there.

"I heard about your mom. And I heard you screaming from down the hall at school." Annabeth looked kind of embarrassed to be talking about it.

"Oh...um...about that." When Percy had heard the news, he had screamed something about loving people, his mom and Annabeth. And his motorcycle-before the accident. He had gone a little crazy.

"Well, if you haven't kicked me out of the list of things you love yet, I'm up for the challenge!" Annabeth sort of changed the subject.

"What...what do you mean?" Percy wasn't exactly sure what Annabeth was trying to say.

"I mean, if you still like me, I like you too, stupid!" Annabeth smiled, hitting him playfully on the shoulder. "And it looks like you do, which means I can do this."

She leaned over and kissed his check, leaving him stunned. Annabeth laughed, which cleared his mind.

"Of course I like you, Annabeth. Who wouldn't?" Percy took his chance, and kissed her right on the lips. She kissed back, of course.

A hospital was not usually an ideal place for a first kiss. But to Percy and Annabeth, it was perfect.

Percy's mom survived, but she had a slight limp. Percy never stopped loving his two girls his whole life.

His mom and Annabeth would always have a special place in his heart. They would always know what it was like to be loved.
