He's always liked gazing into her eyes. They are deep green, and they tell stories of lush meadows and deep lakes and hidden secrets. They remind him of summer afternoons in the park, her small hand in his own.
He's always felt that her eyes suit her name. Lily. Lilies grow wild and have leaves that are the rich green of nature, but above all, lilies are beautiful, delicate flowers, the kind that you admire from afar but never touch for fear of ruining them.
He does ruin everything, he supposes. He doesn't mean to say it, but the word roll off his tongue so easily. Mudblood. He sees it in her face, the way he crushes her, like lacewing flies in a mortar. Lacewing flies are green too, but they aren't the same green. He crushes the flies and he puts them in his potions and everytime he does he grows more bitter, because he only took Advanced Potions because she would be there, and now her wondrously green eyes won't even meet his own.
He apologises over and over again, but she never listens.
As he holds her limp body in his arms, he can hear someone screaming. He thinks it might be him, but he's not sure, because everything is numb and the only thing he can think is please Lily open your eyes please please please.
After that, he thinks he would do anything to see her emerald eyes again, to lose himself once again in the mysterious beauty of their untold secrets. Ten years later, he finally has the chance to gaze into those eyes, but they are not hers. His name is not beautiful, like Lily, but terribly common. Harry. When he looks at the boy, he is only reminded that there is no Lily without James.
Suddenly, the green is not the green of meadows and lakes and flowers and delicate wonder, but the green of rejection and hatred and the bile in his throat.
When he dies, he stares into the boy's eyes, and he can only think one thing : you have your mother's eyes.
Then, the hatred is gone, and everything is green, the soft green of lush meadows and deep lakes and hidden secrets. The soft green of peace.
