Slipping

"What the – ?" Beckett slipped and landed with a thump on the floor by her desk. It was late in the day, and the precinct was empty.

"Beckett?" Castle called out as he stepped off the elevator and walked towards her desk, scanning the room.

"Castle, watch out!" Too late. Castle's feel flew out from under him, and he landed in a heap next to her.

"EEEEwwww. What is this?" Castle ran a finger through the slippery substance that covered the floor.

"No idea." Beckett tugged her knees up, and shifted her weight forward to rise from the floor. She made it about two feet off the ground before her right foot slid forward six inches and threw her off balance. Castle chuckled as she bumped back to the floor.

"Shut up, Castle. I'd like to see you try. It's like a freaking ice rink in here."

Castle accepted the challenge. Shifting to his hands and knees, he moved one leg forward so his foot rested between his feet. Carefully, he rose, slowly bringing his other foot forwards to meet the first. In seconds he was standing, arms extended like a tightrope walker.

"Tada!" Grinning smugly at Beckett, he took a small step, slipped, and promptly face-planted.

"Well done!" Beckett laughed loudly, clapping as he rolled over and wiped the greasy film off his face. He smiled sheepishly and shrugged.

"Your turn, Detective."

Beckett scooted on her bum over to the edge of her desk. She shifted to her knees, and then using the desk as leverage, pulled herself to stand. Looking mildly triumphant, she turned, still holding the desk with one hand.

"Up you go, Castle," she said, wiping her free hand on her trousers before offering it to him. Castle grasped her hand (which was softer than he had imagined), and began to stand.

The maneuver was looking rather successful until he got about halfway off the ground, at which point his foot slipped. He toppled back to the floor, pulling Beckett with him. She landed with a thud on top of him, their foreheads knocking together.

They stared at each other for a moment before Beckett's face slowly split into a smile and she began to laugh. Castle grinned back and, on impulse, leaned up and pecked her on the cheek. She didn't even bother with a token gasp of surprise. This had been a long time coming. Still laughing, their olive oil infused fingers entwined as her lips pressed down on his.

Ryan and Esposito stood at the break room window, watching Castle and Beckett draped across each other on the precinct floor.

"Nicely done, bro," Esposito said as the two men fed the birds. He gestured towards the half empty bottle of Italian olive oil in Ryan's hand. Ryan smiled slyly, nodding towards Castle and Beckett.

"Jenny wanted to bring back some authentic pasta from our honeymoon in Italy for everyone, but I figured those two would like this better."
