Prompt : "John + wee!Dean + wee!Sam, 'Are we there yet?'"
John was grateful; he was really.
It was of those questions that Sammy just seemed to know how to pitch in the right tone of voice to make it beyond irritating. On the days when Dean was in school, it had become an almost constant refrain, "Are we there yet?" only ever seemed to get interspersed with "Can we go get Dean now?" To top it all the answer "Soon" to the former and "Later" to the latter now drew what John was sure was the patented Sammy pout, the one that ought to be marketed as a weapon of mass destruction.
Today though, they had actually driven for almost two hours before Dean's quiet diversionary tactics had begun to fail as Sammy piped, "Are we there yet?"
John couldn't help but be surprised as Dean said, "It won't be much longer now, Sammy." He almost glanced back over his shoulder in surprise, thinking Dean would have known better by now particularly as they still had another couple of hours before they got to Pastor Jim's but Sammy's "Aw, don't want to get there yet. I like this," came as a real shock.
Glancing back at Dean for a moment, he got a grin as Dean held up a couple of the little toy soldiers they'd been collecting from the cereal packets. "Dad, can you take the long way this time, so's Sammy and me can keep playing?"
Sometimes John just wanted to give his eldest son the biggest hug imaginable. Instead he winked and replied, "I'll see what I can do."
"Thanks Dad," came Dean's reply followed by a piping, "Thanks" from Sammy as well.
