Nightmares are expected to come with the life of a ninja. They're a package deal, you see. The severity of the missions, the blood, gore, the loss of someone close; it all leaves a mark on a person that cannot be seen.
That is until the dead of the night.
At first, the shifting of the body in bed could simply be due to the loss of comfort, but only when the whimpering sounds does anyone realise it is, in fact, much worse than what they thought it to be. Sometimes, it can result in screaming. Others, paranoia and injury.
It is a widely known fact that all ninjas get nightmares.
Hatake Kakashi is no exception.
Of course, he wouldn't tell anyone- in his particular line of work, no one would ask either. For him, they tended to come in rounds, sometimes after tough missions, other times they came with no provocation at all.
All are the same however.
All set within the same darkness he sees in his head.
All have someone dying a gruesome death.
All have him trying to save the victim. It's pointless, they all die anyway.
All blame him. The pain that claws at his heart is as excruciating as having his eye gouged out, the blood that always appears, the sight he always loses.
The screams and cries and shouts and snarls, all are the same.
He is to blame. He caused the agony they face. He is the one whose arm is ripped through their chest. He is the one who doesn't deserve the glory, no the pity, he gets. He isn't worthy of the ground he walks upon. He doesn't deserve to waste their breath.
All hate him.
The nightmares always leave him exhausted, unable to sleep in fear of seeing the ones he loved, unable to dream without the guilt clawing its way through his body.
Of course he would never tell; everyone has nightmares, what makes his any different?
He doesn't deserve the pitying looks, the concerned comments, the sad smiles.
He doesn't deserve anything.
He does, however, deserve the nightmares he gets.
He deserves to linger in the pain of their deaths.
He deserves to remain within the darkness finding its way through his body, soul, heart, mind.
