"That's why, I swear I'll protect you with my life." InuYasha promised. Kagome looked up at him, shocked an such an uncharacteristic display of emotion. His voice was sincere, and his warm golden eyes seemed to glow with affection for her. She wanted to respond, to say something, but couldn't find the words.
Before she could find her voice, InuYasha began to pull her closer. His hand, wrapped so tenderly around her own, bringing her palm to his chest. His face slowly drifting towards hers, and Kagome quickly came to realize what was going on. She was a bit startled, but happy. She leaned in towards him. Their noses brushed against each other, sending pleasant chills up and down her back. At the first touch of his lips against hers, a blazing heat raced through Kagome's entire body. Her eyes widened a bit, then fluttering closed as she sighed and leaned into the kiss more. The hand on InuYasha's chest slid upwards, as she wound her arms around his neck, one hand sneaking around to mess with his ears. In turn, his arms wrapped around her middle, holding her close. The broke apart a moment later, and just looked at each other.
Then InuYasha smiled, and pulled Kagome into his lap, so he could hold her against his chest. Both were content to stay like that for the rest of their lives. Eventually, Kagome's deep breathing signaled to InuYasha that she had drifted off to sleep. He looked down at her with a contented smile. Picking her up carefully, so as not to disturb her, he shut off the light and hopped onto her bed, wrapping her in his haori. He leaned his back against the wall and relaxed as Kagome snuggled closer to his chest, muttering something incomprehensible in her sleep. Everything seemed to make sense to him now. He had once cared for Kikyo, but her kiss had never felt like that. She had never filled him with the inner tranquility that Kagome did.
The pain Kikyo's death had caused the hanyo lifted a bit as he sat there and listened to Kagome's heart beating in time with his own. He knew now that everything had happened as it should have in order to bring him here, to this one place where he truly belonged. Filled with a sense of peace he had not known in a long time, InuYasha rested his head against Kagome's and followed her into the realm of sleep.
No more than an hour later, Kagome's mother poked her head into the room.
"Hey sis we're ho-" Sota began. Kagome's mother shushed him quickly and pointed to the bed. InuYasha still sat against the wall, Kagome was still held tight against his chest, and they were still asleep. On silent feet, her mother slipped into the room, draped Kagome's quilt over the sleeping pair, and crept back out, shutting the door behind her.
