He looked over at the portrait above the door. His hand tightened around his gem as he remembered Pearl's shaking silhouette as she hugged Rose's sword to her chest.

"Everyone's always talking about how great Mom was. I just feel I can never live up to that." He remembered telling Bismuth. He shut his eyes as a tear slowly trickled down his face.
When I see, the way you act, wondering when I'm coming back…
She could still see their grief. It wasn't as evident, fourteen years had passed after all, but it was still there.
I could do about anything, I could even learn how to love, like you…
She wanted to reach out and touch them, and cradle them and comfort them. But she knew he would be able to do it just as well. He embodied all of their love and joy. Her love and joy.

She had just as much doubts...
I always thought I might be bad, now I'm sure that it's true…
She had often thought about this, while rummaging through the trash in her room or while sitting in a boxcar on their way to who knew where…

She could still remember her soft voice, and her kind eyes that saw perfection in imperfection.
And I'm nothing like you…
And then the malicious grin that brought reality crashing down, of how she truly was different and what she could've been. And she had nightmares, visions. And now she wasn't there to make them go away.
Look at you go, I just adore you…
She had lived for her, fought for her, cared for her and died for her. And yet…
I wish that I knew, what makes you think I'm so special…
She was just herself. She needed someone to lean on, to help her, to tell her what to do. She needed her again.
If I could, begin to do, something that does right by you…
She had done so many things. So many. It would consume her from time to time.
I would do about anything, I would even learn how to love…
But still, he had helped her. Helped her, saved her, been there for her, in even the worst of times. She would do anything for him now.
When I see the way you look, shaken by how long it took…
Never even told them… Didn't even… The pain was too much. She almost wished that she could just be reduced to shards.

But now, at least she could rest knowing they knew what had happened. What really happened.

But she knew she could do it. She had to hold together. For them, for her, for everyone. She had to.

She still wondered how things would be if she were still here. She was made of it, but she felt that the love that she gave was different, somehow. Somehow.
