Indestructible

From the moment I was born I knew I was different. I didn't cry at birth and my mother was in complete shock. She thought I was dead, after all the pain. Luckily she was saved the grief because I was not dead.

She was told something that I didn't find out until much later. I had a strange disorder (congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis-CIPA); I couldn't feel pain, thus why I hadn't cried. She was warned by the doctors to keep me away from all potential dangers. After a long discussion with the doctors, I was brought home. The place where I lived for five short years…

It was nearly noon, my stomach growled. I giggled and yelled, "Mama! I'm HUNGRY!"

She laughed musically then replied "Is that how you ask for food Jayme?"

I hung my head in false shame, "No mama." This was our daily routine. About twenty minutes had passed; I had managed to tear through my peanut butter and jelly sandwich and succeeded in squeezing into my Superman costume.

I was ready to save the day. I turned to my mama, who was busy at her computer, and began begging her to take me to the park. I broke her down until she finally agreed.

My mama had finally allowed me to ride on the big swings. So naturally, I grabbed one and laid across it my stomach on the swing.

I began kicking myself forward simulating the free sensation of flying. I could feel my cape floating out behind me, I loved it.

When it was time to go home I decided it would be a good idea to zig-zag back and forth across the road with my arms out like an airplane. My mama laughed at first but she soon became tense.

I brushed it off feeling completely indestructible and free. I had just started running backwards, angling myself towards my mama and safety, when my cape got caught under me and I fell. I was crashing towards the ground with alarming speed; I barely had enough time to stick my short arm out. I heard a loud crunch as my hand hit the pavement.

If there hadn't been a sound I wouldn't have known anything was wrong, I might've been okay. But there had been a sound, I did know, and the shock of the break caused me to throw up.

I didn't even have time to react as a moving truck swung around the sharp corner and hurtled towards my immobile body. I saw it come closer and closer. It seemed as though the world slowed down. I looked towards my mama and flashed her a shaky smile as she screamed agonizingly, "Jayme NO!"

Then the truck hit. I was dead within seconds.

I felt no pain.

Even as my soul left my broken body I still felt indestructible…..
