The She-Cat's Rank
It was still in the room, as Chat Noir landed silently on the floor and de-transformed in a flash of green light. The boy hero wandered to his bed and sank down on it, while his kwami whizzed to a chunk of cheese awaiting him on the desk, gobbling it down greedily. As Plagg chomped away, Adrien raised his head from his pondering and asked, "What were the other Chat Noir's like?"
The query rang in the huge room, louder than it should have been. The thousand-year old being froze mid-bite. The very light and air seemed to still.
The kwami gulped, before gruffly asking "Why do you want to know?"
Adrien thought back to Ladybug's excited chattering about her ancient counterparts, relating the heroics of former ladies and expressing her desire to be just like them. He had wondered if he had also come from such an illustrious line, a line of royals and knights and wise warriors. What did he have to live up to?
Plagg scoffed at this reasoning, "Of course Tikki would tell that girl all the good bits, playing up the romance and heroics of all the ladies." He hissed. " I bet she never breathed a word about what my toms had to go through to get their ladies on those high pedestals."
"Your toms?" asked Adrien, confused.
"All the Chat Noir's were toms." Said Plagg "Tikki and the rest of the council made sure of that."
"Toms?" said Adrien, incredulous.
"Males. Boy cats. Toms."
"No girl Chat Noirs?"
"The Great Guardians would never allow it."
"Isn't that sexist?"
Plagg looked angry as he began to explain. " The power of a miraculous depends greatly on how human culture views the animal the miraculous is based on. The whole reason Chat Noir has the power of bad luck, is because humans believe black cats are unlucky. Ladybug is the same way. Not only do the views of the animal itself affect the miraculous, but the names the animals are given by humans greatly affect the miraculous holders. Female bees are known as workers, female holders of the bee miraculous are the workforce of their partnership. The vixen is automatically the trickster and brains of their team. Male bee holders are called drones, their rank is low and they tend to be considered boring. And Ladybugs, lords or ladies either way, and are given the power and privileges designated by that title."
"That still doesn't explain why there are no female Chat Noir's."
Plagg glared at the boy, "You don't get it, do you? Because male cats are refered to as toms, your rank is low and Ladybug gets automatic power to order you around. Her title is why she is the leader of the team. If a girl were to be chosen as the possessor of the ring, the whole power ladder would be turned upside down. Tikki does not want to lose her control grip."
"What is a she-cat called?"
"A QUEEN."
Hello reader's! After I had published this, I had a totally amazing brainwave about which direction to take this. I will publish this separately, entitled "The Queen Mother". Please look into it.
